Consultant Neurosurgeon – Neurosurgery (John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford)

The Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust is one of the largest NHS teaching trusts in the country and provides a wide range of general and specialist clinical services. This substantive consultant post is based in the Department of Neurosurgery at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Headington, Oxford.


Main Duties

The successful candidate will join a team of currently 13 substantive Adult and 4 Paediatric Neurosurgery Consultants. The focus of the post will be the management of Emergency and Elective Neurosurgical patients in Functional Neurosurgery. The postholder’s duties include.

* Provide inpatient and outpatient care for neurosurgical patients both emergency and elective, and subspecialty functional neurosurgery patients.
* Participate in a 1:12 non-resident on call rota with prospective cover, and when on call be within ten miles by road from the John Radcliffe Hospital.
* Work closely with other members of the neurosciences team, including movement disorders neurologists, pain physicians, psychologists, and Specialist Advanced Nurse Practitioners.
* Provide equal access to clinics, theatres, junior doctor and administrative support and office space.
* Support the training of Specialist Registrars and Functional Neurosurgical Fellows within the department.


Qualifications and Training

* Full GMC registration with licence to practise.
* FRCS (SN) or equivalent.
* Higher medical degree.
* On GMC specialist register (CCT, CESR (CP) or alternative routes) with proposed CCT/CESR date within 6 months of interview.


Experience

* Extensive training and experience in general adult neurosurgery; fellowship(s) in Functional Neurosurgery.
* Evidence of ability to make independent decisions at consultant level and to manage complex clinical problems.
* Previous experience at Consultant Neurosurgeon level.


Skills and Knowledge

* Ability to lead a team of professionals.
* Effective administrative and time management skills.
* Evidence of significant contribution to successful teamwork.
* Highly developed communication and interpersonal skills.
* Experience of formal and informal contributions to teaching and training.
* Experience in wide range of neuromodulation techniques and conducting clinical audits.
* Peer‑reviewed publications and presentations at scientific meetings relevant to neuromodulation.
* Interest in teaching with a portfolio of teaching and training achievements.
