Job Overview
As an Engineering Manager, you will lead and coach a talented engineering team within Sainsbury’s Retail Store Operations domain. Your focus will be on driving the delivery of impactful technology solutions that improve efficiency and performance across the business while cultivating a culture of collaboration and continuous improvement.
Team & Technology
The team manages in‑store stock systems that ensure accurate product sequencing and placement across stores. The stack includes:
* Backend: C# and .NET with REST APIs (Stock Platform API, Code Control API)
* Frontend: Next.js with Fable (Colleague Hub)
* Data: MongoDB Atlas (NoSQL) and Azure SQL Server
* Infrastructure: AWS, Azure, CI/CD pipelines, Jira, ServiceNow, GitHub
* Mobile: Android Zebra TC53e devices integrated with DataWedge for barcode scanning
What You’ll Do
* Lead and enable the delivery of technology solutions that create value, drive efficiency, and increase performance.
* Line‑manage and guide a multi‑skilled engineering team, ensuring they have the necessary resources and skills to deliver end‑to‑end technical solutions.
* Mentor and coach team members, recruit diverse and talented individuals, and promote a culture of collaboration, learning, and respect.
* Collaborate with Product Managers and Engineers to define vision and technical direction, manage multiple deliveries, and take end‑to‑end ownership of products, including change and service management.
* Drive the development of new features, promote best engineering practices, and advocate for agile/lean delivery methodologies.
* Manage initiative‑level budgets, ensure adherence to processes and standards, and demonstrate positive attitudes that contribute to a culture of excellence and inclusivity.
Who You Are
* Experienced engineering leader with deep understanding of engineering practices and talent for coaching and developing teams.
* Strong understanding of technology environments, leading by example and inspiring collaboration and continuous improvement.
* Technical expertise combined with the ability to prioritise and manage multiple deliveries, enabling large‑scale platform development.
* Excellent decision‑making and implementation of best practices, with experience managing Capex and Opex responsibilities.
* Strong leadership and communication skills; builds relationships at all levels and contributes to an inclusive and diverse culture.
Essential Criteria
* Demonstrable track record of leading engineering teams, including planning, performance management, goal setting, one‑to‑one meetings, technical roadmaps, and process enhancements.
* Keen enthusiasm for promoting and integrating AI technologies within engineering teams.
* Solid technical foundation with practical experience in back‑end programming languages.
