Specialist Children’s Occupational Therapist – BCP Council
Join to apply for the Specialist Children’s Occupational Therapist role at BCP Council. This term-time only Occupational Therapy role is primarily a consultative position in which you will support school leaders, teachers, SENCOs and TAs across BCP to understand the impact Sensory Processing difficulties can have on Children & Young People’s participation and engagement within the classroom and wider school environment. It will aim to support education colleagues to learn, develop and implement meaningful sensory strategies to support their students to reach their potential.
Responsibilities
* Provide consultative support to school leaders, teachers, SENCOs and teaching assistants on Sensory Processing and its impact on participation and engagement in the classroom and school setting.
* Conduct individual clinical observations and 1-1 assessments as required; use sensory screening tools such as the School Sensory Processing Measure.
* Deliver targeted training for school staff around Sensory Processing; create sensory toolkits/sensory diets for individual children; recommend environmental modifications; set up gross motor/movement groups; demonstrate use of sensory strategies and resources to education staff.
* Support schools with advice, strategies and implementation to help children with or without SEND who experience sensory processing difficulties.
* Apply clear outcome measures and data collection to establish the effectiveness and value of the OT service; contribute to evidence-based practice; may be asked to contribute to tribunal requests with support provided to develop skills in this area.
* Supervise and provide day-to-day oversight of the Schools Sensory Service OT Assistant.
* Maintain safeguarding and knowledge of local and national SEND policies; travel across BCP to visit several schools (car driver essential).
* Work under the supervision of the BCP Children’s Occupational Therapy Team Manager with peer supervision and access to ongoing SI training opportunities.
Qualifications and requirements
* Qualified Occupational Therapist (HCPC registered).
* Postgraduate training and experience in Sensory Integration (minimum Level 1 or actively working towards).
* Experience working in educational settings with children who have a range of additional needs and disabilities.
* Sound knowledge of safeguarding and SEND policies; ability to contribute to service evaluation and evidence-based practice.
* Supervision experience or willingness to supervise the OT Assistant.
* Full driving licence and access to a vehicle to travel across BCP to schools.
* Ability to work within a term-time schedule and collaborate with the Schools OT Sensory Outreach Service and wider OT team.
Employment details
Term-time only; part-time options available. From 1 December 2025, the pay range is £47,181 - £53,460 p.a. (pro rata for part-time), with a refreshed Pay and Reward package applicable. More details are available on the careers site in the brochure “More than just a job.”
