Responsibilities
* Develop and test new analytical techniques for rapid microplastic assessment in complex environmental matrices.
* Optimise standard operating procedures for microplastics analysis, including pyrolysis GC‑MS and fluorescence‑based techniques.
* Collaborate with Analytical Chemists and Machine Learning experts to enhance methodologies.
* Embed within the CREWW Microplastics Research Team and support the delivery of the FLAIR project.
* Analyse and present large data sets and write scientific papers for publication.
* Work with business‑sensitive data within the partnership between the University of Exeter and South West Water, meeting deadlines and delivering high‑quality work within tight timeframes.
Qualifications
* Relevant PhD or equivalent qualification/experience in a related field.
* Strong knowledge of research methods and techniques for analysing microplastics in complex environmental matrices.
* Experience with analytical techniques such as FTIR, pyrolysis GC‑MS and fluorescence‑based methods.
* Ability to analyse and present large data sets and publish scientific papers.
* Track record of meeting deadlines and working within tight timeframes.
Benefits and Conditions
Position: Postdoctoral Research Fellow – fixed term contract funded by South West Water until 30 June 2028.
Start date: July 2023.
Starting salary: from £43,482 on Grade F.
