Role Overview
A vacancy at Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust. An exciting opportunity for a motivated, enthusiastic Lead Embryologist and Laboratory Service Manager to join the NHS‑based providers of fertility treatment located in Surrey. The post is supported by a Lead Consultant HFEA Personal Responsible (PR) and Quality Manager.
Responsibilities
* Scientific direction and management of the Embryology laboratory, ensuring efficient, productive, and safe operation within the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act (1990) and the HFEA Code of Practice.
* Liaise with medical staff on clinical matters, using professional judgement to advise both general and individual patients.
* Lead development and implementation of new laboratory treatments and protocols, setting strategic direction of the laboratory in line with national priorities, established standards of practice and the needs of Beginnings ACU.
* Oversee performance and training of all embryologists and trainees, including STPs, involved in clinical gamete handling and subsequent embryos in the Fertility Unit.
* Take responsibility for the laboratory budget, ensuring financial balance and developing strategies to reduce cost.
* Communicate effectively with medical, nursing and scientific members of the Fertility Unit team and other associated teams to ensure smooth and effective running of the unit and attainment of annual targets.
* Perform various laboratory procedures, introducing new laboratory procedures as necessary.
* Lead continual development of quality management systems and compliance with HFEA Licence Conditions, Regulations and the Code of Practice.
Qualifications & Experience
* Significant learning post HPC registration and robust clinical experience in embryology.
* Experience validating IVF, ICSI and freezing processes.
* Leadership skills with experience of team management and supervisor training of junior staff to ACE certificate levels.
* Excellent communication skills with significant patient contact.
* Thorough understanding of HFEA regulations, HTA and quality systems.
* Higher degree or equivalent experience desirable.
Working Hours & Conditions
The Trust actively promotes CPD, teaching and opportunities for presentation at professional meetings. Weekend, bank holiday and out‑of‑hours/on‑call work will be required on a rotational basis. Candidates will undergo a Disclosure and Barring check and an Occupational Health Assessment.
