Full-Time, Fixed-term appointment for 1 year

Based in Liverpool with international travel

LSTM is a globally recognised centre for tropical medicine and public health. The Department of International Public Health leads interdisciplinary research aiming to improve health outcomes in low- and middle-income countries. We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Research Assistant to join our Emergency Obstetic Care and Quality of Care Unit (EmOC&QoC), to contribute to impactful implementation research projects.

The unit focuses on implementation and health systems research in maternal and newborn health to inform global and national policies, strengthen research capacity in low and middle-income settings, and improve quality of care through Advanced Obstetrics and Surgical Skills (AOSS) training and strengthening pre-service education in emergency obstetric and newborn care.

As a Research Assistant, you will play a key role in supporting the design, implementation, and evaluation of international public health research focused on maternal and newborn health. The successful post holder will specifically support on postpartum haemorrhage (PPH) and AI ultrasound implementation research under the Gates Foundation grant. This includes contribution to identifying barriers to implementing PPH recommendations, co-designing context specific PPH guidelines, examining challenges in adopting the PPH bundle approach, and exploring how AI-assisted ultrasound integrate into the existing antenatal care (ANC) workflows.

Key responsibilities will include:

1. Contribute to the drafting of study protocols
2. Assist in the development of data collection tools
3. Contribute to the management of study data
4. Complete standard ethics submission paperwork for LSTM and in-country ethics
5. Track ethics submission and respond in a timely manner to queries from the REC
6. Complete annual REC reports/reporting requirements
7. Analyse qualitative data using appropriate software
8. Analyse quantitative data using SPSS, R or STATA
9. Submit research outputs
10. Actively contribute to submissions for grant funding and partner capacity development

The ideal candidate will have excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work as an integral and flexible member of fast-paced multi-disciplinary research team. You will be able to demonstrate:

11. Master’s degree in related field (global health, public health)
12. Postgraduate professional qualification, such as the Diploma of Tropical Medicine, or certificate in maternal and child health
13. Knowledge and interest in MNH in LMICs
14. Experience in conducting research in LMICS using mixed methods
15. Experience in AI-assisted ultrasound service research
16. Experience in reporting and open access publications for donors such as Gates foundation and Global Fund
17. Experience in biomedical/ social science research in LMICs
18. Experience in the critical appraisal of medical literature at postgraduate level
