Job Summary
The phlebotomist role at Unsworth Medical Centre requires an enthusiastic, friendly, positive, professional individual who enjoys working as part of a team, strives to provide a high-quality phlebotomy service to patients registered with the practice in an efficient, effective, courteous and confidential manner.
The role involves collecting blood samples safely and efficiently, ensuring accurate labelling and handling, maintaining infection prevention standards and delivering excellent patient care in line with practice, NHS and CQC requirements.
The phlebotomist will work collaboratively within our practice team
Main duties of the job
Clinical Duties
Perform venepuncture safely and competently in accordance with local and national guidelines.
Identify patients correctly using approved identification protocols.
Ensure correct labelling, documentation, and handling of specimens.
Prepare and maintain clinical areas before and after procedures.
Manage patients who may be anxious, needle-phobic, elderly, or vulnerable.
Recognise and respond appropriately to adverse reactions (e.g., fainting).
Maintain accurate patient records using the clinical system (e.g., EMIS, TQuest).
Support infection prevention and control procedures.
Patient Care
Provide a professional, compassionate, and reassuring service.
Maintain patient dignity, confidentiality, and privacy at all times.
Explain procedures clearly and obtain informed consent.
Support patients with additional needs (e.g., learning disabilities, mobility issues).
Administrative & Organisational Duties
Ensure timely dispatch of samples to pathology laboratories.
Monitor and maintain adequate stock of clinical supplies.
Report equipment faults or clinical incidents in line with practice policy.
Participate in audit and quality improvement activities where required.
Support practice in meeting NHS targets, QOF requirements and national standards
About Us
Unsworth Medical Centre is located on the outskirts of Bury within the community of Unsworth.
We have a friendly practice team comprising of GPs, nurses, trainee nurse associate, healthcare support workers, reception and admin staff
We work within the Whitefield Primary Care network and neighbourhood.

Experience of venepuncture in a healthcare setting
Experience of working with a diverse patient group
Experience using clinical IT systems (e.g., EMIS, TQuest, AccuRx)

Previous experience in a GP Practice or Primary Care setting

Qualifications
Essential
Educated to GCSE level standard minimum of 5 passes at Grade A-C (including English)
Recognised phlebotomy training certificate
Evidence of recent infection prevention and control training

NVQ Level 2/3 in Health & Social Care
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
