Main Purpose of the Job
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Policy and Public Affairs Manager (Maternity Cover) to join the Directorate. This position will deliver a framework of policy and public affairs activities as outlined in the John Innes Centre’s Engagement Strategy. The role will ensure that the JIC has clear routes to provide evidence to inform and influence priority areas of policy and that staff and students across the JIC are effectively supported to successfully engage with policy makers.
Key Relationships
This post sits at the interface between research at JIC and policy stakeholders.
External relationships will include policy makers (including politicians and civil servants), collaborators and funders.
Internally, the post-holder will work closely with a broad range of scientists, with the senior management team, and with communications and knowledge exchange professionals.
This post reports to the Director of JIC.
Main Activities & Responsibilities
Percentage To lead delivery of a programme of policy and public affairs activity for the organisation, as outlined in the JIC’s Engagement Strategy 10 To scan the horizon for changes of policy, practice or demand to help ensure that the JIC understands the wider policy context for its work and frames its vision in the context of long-term global demands 10 To work with staff across JIC to prepare credible policy positions on topics which impact JIC research, researchers or translation of our research 10 To provide responses to relevant consultations and calls for evidence 10 To plan and deliver effective public affairs strategies to inform and influence policy makers on priority topics
10 To organise public affairs events and meetings with policy-makers and collaborators
10 To work closely with partner organisations on joint policy projects, including partners on the Norwich Research Park, at other BBSRC funded institutes and other relevant organisations across the sector.
10 To ensure professional support for staff in their delivery of policy and public affairs through timely briefings, training and advice
10 To work with the Communications and Engagement team to convey accurate and engaging messages about the JIC’s policy positions externally – to the public, journalists and other stakeholders.
10 As agreed with line manager, any other duties commensurate with the nature of the role 10

The role:
The Policy and Public Affairs Manager willdeliver a framework of policy and public affairs activities as outlined in the John Innes Centre’s Engagement Strategy. The role will ensure that the JIC has clear routes to provide evidence to inform and influence priority areas of policy and that staff and students across the JIC are effectively supported to successfully engage with policy makers.
In this role, you will have the opportunity to develop your skills in stakeholder engagement and effective policy communication.
The ideal candidate:
Candidates should have adegree in a relevant science subject, a broad awareness across thesubjects and disciplines relevant to the work of JIC and an understanding of the research policy environment.
They should have in-depth knowledge of effective project management and exceptional communication and interpersonal skills. Candidates should have the ability to engage and influence at all levels of management and have experience of successfully engaging with the UK government and its agencies.
Additional information:
This role is part-time, for 22.5 hours per week and is expected to last for 12 months. This could be shorter or longer depending on when the absent employee returns to work.
