Job Title: Foundation Year 1 Doctor in General Surgery
Start Date: ASAP
Contract Type: Fixed-term
Duration: Until 4th August 2026
Purpose: Covering Maternity Leave
The Surgical department at UHS is looking for a Foundation Year 1 Doctor to help support delivering elective and emergency surgery service at University Hospital Southampton NHS FT. This post is ideal for those who are within two years from graduation with some experience working as an FY1 in the NHS already but wanting to gain experience in surgery.
Responsibilities
* Prepare ward rounds, support the team on ward rounds and complete FY1‑level jobs including prescribing, discharge summaries, requesting and chasing investigations.
* Participate in the on‑call team out of hours and gain experience in admitting and assessing acutely unwell surgical patients, and looking after post‑operative patients on the wards.
Qualifications and Requirements
* Applicants should have an educational framework equivalent to training grade doctors.
* Named educational supervisor will be assigned at the start of the post.
* Continued Professional Development (CPD) is highly supported and encouraged; study leave options are available.
* Applicants requiring Skilled Worker sponsorship must meet the Home Office application criteria prior to submitting an application.

Compensation
Grades for Trust appointed fellows will be paid a basic salary at a nodal pay point linked to the grade, at the rate set out in the National Medical and Dental Pay Circular. Additional remuneration for hours set out in the doctors' work schedule (including additional hours, weekend allowance, and hours that attract enhanced pay) may apply.
Appointment will be made under local contractual terms and conditions of service for Trust‑appointed fellow doctors and dentists.
