Laboratory Technician Degree Apprenticeship
Apprenticeship, 3 1/2 years, Mechanical Engineering Technology Degree Programme at Sheffield Hallam University
Place of Work: Trent Refractories Ltd., Menasha Way, Queensway Industrial Estate, Brigg Road, Scunthorpe DN16 3RT
Responsibilities
* Testing: Prepare samples and perform the required tests on products and raw materials, as directed by the Technical Director. Ensure tests are undertaken in accordance with the appropriate test method and safe system of work, within required timescales.
* Data capture: Collate data and record test results accurately, using paper and electronic formats.
* Sample handling: Storage and disposal of test samples in appropriate locations to maintain a clean, orderly working environment.
* Plant and site support: Internal trial support for new product/process/material trials; supervise external trials and installations as required, capturing information to ensure quality standards are maintained.
* Administration: Maintain filing systems; transfer test results to server/SharePoint promptly; ensure results and documentation are accurate and stored correctly; support stock control and housekeeping.
* General duties: General housekeeping, maintenance and repair of equipment and facilities; adhere to health and safety requirements; monitor stock levels and ensure timely replenishment.
Qualifications
* Mandatory: GCSE grade C/4 or above in English, Mathematics, Science (Chemistry and/or Physics); and one of the following: 112 UCAS points with appropriate A levels or equivalent; or suitable BTEC/EPQ combinations including mathematics or a mathematics-based subject; or ONC/HNC in Materials Science; or other equivalent qualifications that include mathematics.
* Additional preferences: A-level in Science, or equivalent; further science/technology-based qualifications may be considered.
Requirements & Skills
* Understanding and basic proficiency in Office 365 (including SharePoint, Outlook, Word, Excel).
* Good attention to detail; ability to work independently and in a team; strong organisational and communication skills (written and verbal English).
* Ability to follow instructions and safe systems of work; ability to adapt to different situations.
Contract & Benefits
* Job type: Full-time, Apprenticeship
* Salary: Living Wage, £24,570 per annum
* Holidays: 20 days per annum
* Hours: Monday to Friday, 8 am to 4 pm (40 hour week)

Additional information
We are a family-owned business manufacturing bespoke specialist concrete products for high-temperature applications. You will be trained and supported by a highly qualified scientist and have the opportunity to learn all aspects of manufacturing refractory products. The role offers time from work release to attend Sheffield Hallam University for the degree program.
Closing Date: 30 Sept 2025; Start Date: ASAP. This is a work role in a Refractories Laboratory and Plant with learning opportunities; hands-on and rewarding. Rail links between Scunthorpe and Sheffield are good.
