Brief Description
What will you be doing?
You’ll help keep our nation moving every single day.
A critical part of the work we do is the daily upkeep of the rail network. As a technician, you’ll work outdoors in a team, supporting essential maintenance to keep the railway running safely and smoothly for passengers and freight users.
Our technician community comes from diverse backgrounds, and this might be your first consideration of a career in rail. We focus on your transferable skills and behaviors; if you can demonstrate those, we will provide all necessary training for you to work safely and competently on the network.
If you meet the requirements, you can look forward to a rewarding career with a company that recently ranked in the top 50 in Glassdoor's 2021 Best Places to Work.
There are 3 positions available.
About the role (External)
Our technicians serve as the vital link between the team leader and operatives.
Specializing in Overhead Lines, you’ll work with high voltage systems to ensure the railway has power. Working at heights is routine, using various tools to measure, adjust, repair, and modify cables and wires, keeping Britain’s railway operational.
Technicians work outdoors in all conditions, at all times of the year, day or night. You may be involved in manual work, transporting equipment across challenging terrain. Safety, adherence to rules, and teamwork are critical, especially working near moving trains at high speed.
You matter to your team
As a natural team player, you’ll lead when asked, ensuring work is done safely, and team members are competent and compliant with safety standards. You’ll be a role model for safe working behaviors and confident to challenge risks to safety.
You matter to us
Today’s technicians can progress to become tomorrow’s team leaders. Your commitment to learning is vital, and we will provide training to develop your technical and non-technical skills. If transitioning from another industry, our structured training will prepare you for a rewarding career in rail.
While rail experience is not mandatory, you should demonstrate how your transferable skills meet the following:
* Leadership: Ability to lead, motivate, and direct a team safely and efficiently.
* Effective communication: Ability to deliver clear instructions to team and colleagues.
* Technical skills: Knowledge of inspection, faulting, maintenance, and renewal techniques relevant to your discipline.
* Safety: Role model safe behaviors, implement safe systems, and challenge unsafe situations.
* Problem solving: Persistent in finding safe, effective solutions and staying updated with standards and procedures.
* Willingness to learn: Continuous development of skills and knowledge.
* Relevant qualification: Ideally, NVQ Level 1 or 2 in the discipline or equivalent experience.
Additional information
* Shifts: Includes days, nights, and weekends.
* Outdoor working: Comfortable working in all weather conditions.
* Safe working: Employment subject to drug, alcohol testing, medical, and BPSS checks, including hearing and eyesight exams.
* Driving: Must have a category B driving license to operate company vehicles.
* Commute times: Must live within a 60-minute commute of the location.
