'Thisis an interesting, hands on and unique position within an exciting area ofpharmacy. I began my career journey as a Pharmacy Services Assistant and thenmy next step was to progress to this role. This position really helped mebecome an established and vital member of the team, broadened my knowledgeand gave me skills that are unique compared to other areas of Pharmacy. Itssuch an important, specialist position that gives you more responsibility andgreater career opportunities, I enjoyed every second of this role. This is agreat position for a long-term career or a necessary step to develop furtherand progress within preparative services. Youwill ideally be ambitious, self-motivated, committed, dynamic and have goodpractical skills, as this is a 'hands on' role. As the successful candidateyou must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills and be able towork on your own initiative as well as working within a team.

Main duties of the job

Youwill be working across site, at each of our Aseptic Units (LGI and SJUH).

Youwill be working with a number of different professions, performing a varietyof different tasks, whilst working to strict deadlines.

Overviewof role:

Worksheetwriting, labelling and costing of medicines.

Stockcontrol (duties given to you by the Inventory Controllers).

Cleaningof the Aseptic suite.

PreparingCIVAs, Chemotherapy and Parenteral Nutrition using aseptic technique insidean isolator, whilst working in a clean room environment. This involvesgowning up in sterile clean room clothing.

Preparationof the clean room environment, including the assembly of raw materials.

Therewill also be a requirement to help induct and train new members of staff oncefully competent in the role.

Job responsibilities

Thepost holder will not have any line management responsibilities. They willprovide induction and training for Pharmacy Services Assistants and PharmacyPorters and other staff as required.

Thepost holder will be required to work evenings, weekends and Bank Holidays ona rostered basis.


KNOWLEDGE,SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

Level2 Apprenticeship /Pharmacy Services Assistant or NVQ level 2 in PharmacyServices or Pharmacy Manufacturing Course.

Experienceof working in a community or hospital pharmacy.

Knowledgeof procedures of own working area following on the job training

Knowledgeof good customer care.

Experienceof stock control systems

Musthave excellent verbal communication skills.

Abilityto work accurately under pressure and follow standard operating procedures.

Goodliteracy and numeracy skills

Abilityto interpret written instructions.

Abilityto supervise and give instruction to Pharmacy Services Assistants and Portersand other staff as required

Healthand Safety/Risk Management

Allstaff are responsible for working with their colleagues to maintain andimprove the quality of services provided to our patients and other serviceusers. COMMUNICATION& WORKING RELATIONSHIPS

Thepost holder will maintain a close working relationship with the team they areworking in, as well as the Pharmacy Technician Specialist. They willcommunicate with ward staff, patients/relatives referring when necessary.

SPECIALWORKING CONDITIONS

PHYSICALEFFORT:

Accuracy,dexterity, manipulation and a degree of speed in the preparation anddispensing/assembly of medicines against written prescriptions/requisitions.

Thisinvolves drawing up using syringes and weighing small amounts of rawmaterials.

Physicaleffort required if lifting/moving boxes of fluids or dietary products. Thiscan be on a daily basis and can weigh up to 10kg. There may be an infrequentneed to handle goods up to 20kg.

SeniorPharmacy Services Assistants working in Stores and Distribution will berequired to frequently lift heavy boxes up to 20kg throughout a shift. Theywill also be required to move, using specialist equipment, weights above20kg. This will be at intervals throughout the day.

MENTALEFFORT:

Concentrationis required to label, assemble, prepare and dispense medicines against awritten prescription/requisition. This activity is performed all day but thepost holder has regular short breaks between tasks. Examples are:- to label aprescription can take approx 5-10 minutes then move away from PC and start toassemble medicines required. Then dispense medicines and leave for accuracychecking.

Toprepare medicines in an aseptic unit may require longer period ofconcentration with a longer break after a period of up to 3 hours.

ControlledDrug dispensing requires concentration as specific checks have to be made atall stages of labelling and dispensing.

SeniorPharmacy Services Assistants working in Pharmacy Stores/Distribution may berequired to be trained and certified to operate manual handling equipmentsuch as fork lift truck and automated pallet movers. This would be on average2-3 hours a day.

SeniorPharmacy Services Assistants working in Pharmacy Stores/DistributionWarehouse are required to accuracy check orders for periods of up to 3 hours.

EMOTIONALEFFORT:

Someprescriptions can be for terminally ill patients. Also, when working in anout-patient dispensary, staff are dealing with patients who have variousconditions and can on occasion be asked questions. These are usually referredto a more senior member of staff.

WORKINGCONDITIONS:

Thepost holder is allocated to work in one of the pharmacy sections. They may onthe odd occasion encounter aggressive behaviour and most staff have attended the violence and aggression workshop. Any problems would be passed on to amore senior member of staff.

Staffreceiving goods into Pharmacy Stores will work with changes in temperaturee.g. receipt of order into cold store, working on or near open loading bays,working outside with fork lift truck.

Thepost holder will be required to receive, assemble, prepare/dispense cytotoxicmedicines in accordance with COSHH and SOPs.

Whenworking in aseptic dispensary the post holder is required to work in aconfined environment where aerosols are used eg alcohol sprays fordisinfection. Staff follow COSSH guidelines and SOPs.


Person Specification


Experience

* Experience of working in a pharmacy setting.
* Experience of working within an Aseptics unit.


Qualifications

* Level 2 Apprenticeship / Pharmacy Services Assistant or NVQ level 2 in Pharmacy Services or Pharmacy Manufacturing Course. (Or near completion of course).


Skills & behaviours

* Can work in a fast paced environment.
* Good numeracy and literacy skills.
* Can work in a physically demanding role.
