Wakefield Council is seeking a compassionate and dedicated Portage Home Visitor to join our Wakefield Portage team within the Educational Psychology Service. This is a rewarding opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of young children with additional needs and their families. As a Portage Home Visitor, you will provide weekly home-based educational support to pre-school children with developmental delays or disabilities. You will work in close partnership with families, helping them to support their child’s learning and development through structured play and tailored activities. Key Responsibilities Conduct regular home visits to support children aged 0–5 with additional needs. Develop and implement individualised learning plans in collaboration with families. Monitor and record children’s progress, adjusting strategies as needed. Work closely with other professionals including health visitors, early years settings, and social care teams. Provide emotional support and guidance to families, empowering them to be active participants in their child’s development. To contribute to and/or lead training sessions for families and / or professionals. About You We are looking for someone who is: Passionate about early childhood development and inclusive education. Experienced in working with young children with special educational needs. Skilled in building trusting relationships with families. Organised, empathetic, and able to work independently. Essential Requirements A relevant qualification in early years education, social work, nursing, or a related field. Experience working directly with parents/carers of pre-school children with additional needs Experience supporting children with additional needs. Knowledge of early child development, inclusive practices and developmental differences e.g. Autism, Downs Syndrome etc. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. A full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle for home visits. Computer skills and abilities to support accurate record keeping. Desirable Completion of a Portage Workshop accredited by the National Portage Association. Experience working within a multi-agency framework.
