Department Overview
The MFL department provides a dynamic, innovative and supportive environment where engaging and varied lessons enable students to realise their potential. Students use language with confidence and enjoy learning about other cultures. The department currently consists of five full‑time members and one part‑time member, many of whom also teach in other subject areas and hold middle or senior leadership positions across the school.
Students study Spanish and French in Years 7–9. From Year 10 onwards, 75% of each cohort study a language to GCSE, with most continuing to Spanish and French. Good numbers also progress to Spanish and French at A‑level.
Key Responsibilities
1. Ensure high standards of teaching and learning for all students throughout the department.
2. Develop a curriculum vision and plan.
3. Create Schemes of Learning that enable all students to become effective learners.
4. Produce a strategic three‑year plan to deliver the faculty vision, supported by an annual action plan.
5. Complete an annual self‑review of the department, including an analysis and commentary of student academic performance, and use the conclusions to modify the strategic plan.
6. Contribute to discussions on course selection and implementation.
7. Collaborate effectively with partner primary schools to ensure a smooth transition for new students.
8. Monitor and evaluate the quality of learning, including lesson delivery, teacher feedback, assessment, differentiation and classroom management.

1. Communicate a clear department vision that encourages ownership, team spirit and commitment among faculty members.
2. Line‑manage and professionally develop staff to help them perform at their best.
3. Meet regularly with the line manager and keep them informed of departmental developments.
4. Maintain a secure and safe learning environment, support student well‑being, and contribute to assemblies supporting the Academy ethos.
5. Ensure the highest standards of student behaviour so that all students can learn effectively.
6. Communicate productively with parents, keeping them well‑informed about their children’s progress, achievements and any incidents of poor behaviour.
