Overview
We are seeking a highly motivated and organized Technical Manager to support the day‑to‑day running and research activities of Professor Katie Field’s group. The group investigates plant–fungi–soil interactions, focusing on mycorrhizal associations. The role will play a central part in a Royal Society funded project on the function, regulation and ecology of diverse mycorrhizal fungi and their networks.
Responsibilities
* Oversee the day‑to‑day running of the research laboratory, including ordering, routine maintenance of equipment, consumables, and stocks to ensure a safe and efficient working environment.
* Ensure compliance with health, safety, environmental and data protection regulations and stay updated on relevant regulatory frameworks and international standards.
* Maintain laboratory equipment, undertake routine technical maintenance, and assist with laboratory database upkeep.
* Collaborate with the Principal Investigator to prepare supporting documents such as posters, papers, reports, and grant applications.
* Communicate research strategy, translate project objectives into actionable tasks, and monitor progress.
* Deliver technical training to students, colleagues and collaborators, tailoring the approach to their needs.
* Support project planning and ensure effective use of time and resources to meet research objectives.
* Collect, organise and analyse experimental data to support decision‑making and project delivery.
* Lead and support sustainable laboratory practices to minimise waste and environmental impact.
* Apply critical thinking and collaborate to solve problems.
* Help build and sustain a positive and inclusive research culture, supporting equality, diversity and wellbeing within the lab.
* Attend and actively participate in project meetings and research group meetings.
* Take responsibility for self‑development and keep abreast of new techniques and technologies.
* Carry out other duties commensurate with the grade and remit of the post.
Qualifications
* MSc (or higher) in Biosciences or equivalent significant experience.
* IOSH Managing Safely or equivalent safety qualification.
* Experience in plant‑soil interaction techniques, including soil nutrient analyses, isotope work, plant and fungal culture, use of controlled environments, and molecular biology.
* Experience in laboratory management, safety compliance, and stock control.
* Strong written and verbal communication, report‑writing skills, and ability to explain complex concepts.
* Expertise in relevant IT applications, data management and analysis.
* Understanding of resource and project management, planning and monitoring.
* Experience delivering high‑quality technical support for research milestones.
* Professionally registered such as RSci or HEA accreditation.
* Flexible, adaptable, and able to respond to changing demands and priorities.
* Awareness of sustainable practices in laboratory management and experience in implementing them.
* Experience managing others, delegating tasks, and ensuring competency.
* IBiosafety Practitioner Level 1.
