Senior Pharmacy Technician (Primary Care)

Working for Cramlington Seaton valley Neighbourhood practices, you will be working between Cramlington medical group, Elsdon Avenue Surgery and Northumbria way. The Senior Pharmacy Technician will co-ordinate the medicine hub activities to the extent necessary to ensure the development and maintenance of a high standard of patient care, sound teamwork and close co-operation with the clinical and managerial team. The post holder will work under the management of the Clinical Pharmacy Service to deliver a comprehensive medicines management in a primary care setting to ensure a safe and efficient service is maintained, delivering a range of medicines management activities including medicines reconciliation and repeat prescription requests. Pharmacy staff in all sectors and other healthcare professionals will ensure a patient orientated medicines management service is provided, conducting medicines reviews for patients. To work closely with the Clinical Pharmacist to adopt a team approach to medicines management. To work with the Clinical Pharmacist to develop and undertake medicines management audits, to support discussion within the practice and agree subsequent actions.

Main duties of the job

Main Duties would entail:

* Work alongside other staff and develop their skills to prioritise workload. May supervise medicines technicians, Pharmacy technicians, student pharmacy technicians and pre-registration pharmacists.
* Interpret prescriptions for drug problems such as drug dosage, form and administration. Considers legality, clarity and risk associated with prescribed medicines and prescriptions and make basic interventions to ensure medicines are safe for patients and be able to refer as appropriate to medicines management technician or pharmacist.
* Interpret basic medicine supply information and consider appropriate solutions ensure continuation of supply, referring as appropriate. Assess situations concerning the availability of prescribed medicines and refer non-standard prescriptions to relevant authority.
* Assist and coach practice staff in the collation and analysis of data for reviews/ audits as required improving medicines management within the practice.
* Support embedded systems to ensure governance and operational issues are reviewed, discussed weekly with the team and escalated as required.


About us

Northumbria Primary Care Ltd (NPC) is a pioneering partnership with local GPs and now manages several GP practices with around 50,000 registered patients in Northumberland and North Tyneside.

Whilst appointees will have a base practice within NPC,they may be asked to work at other practices across our group. We do however limit this as much as possible as we appreciate continuity is vital to effective primary care.

Job responsibilities

* As Senior Pharmacy Technician, the post-holder will be responsible to the Operational Services Development Manager. The post holder will work autonomously in the day-to-day management of the team they manage.
* The Senior Pharmacy Technician will co- ordinatee the CSU medicine hub activities to the extent necessary to ensure the development and maintenance of a high standard of patient care, sound teamwork and close co-operation with the clinical and managerial team.
* As Senior Pharmacy Technician the post holder will be on site at the medicine hub every day to deal with staffing issues, informal complaints, ensure the workforce are appropriately supported, trained and appraised
* The post holder will work under the management of the Clinical Pharmacy Service to deliver a comprehensive medicines management hub in a primary care setting to ensure a safe and efficient service is maintained, delivering a range of medicines management activities including medicines reconciliation and repeat prescription requests
* To liaise with pharmacy staff in all sectors and other healthcare professionals to ensure a patient orientated medicines management service is provided, conducting medicines reviews for patients identified by the wider multidisciplinary team or from other medicines management initiatives.
* To work closely with the Clinical Pharmacist to adopt a team approach to medicinesmanagement, acting as a key member of the multidisciplinary team and the wider pharmacy team, providing medicines management advice to healthcare professionals, patients and carers.
* To work with the Clinical Pharmacist to develop and undertake medicines management audits, to support discussion within the practice and agree subsequent actions.


Person Specification


Qualifications / Professional Registration

* BTEC in pharmaceutical science or NVQ Level 3 supported by appropriate underpinning knowledge e.g. national certificate in Pharmaceutical Sciences or equivalent qualification, plus specialist training and experience equivalent to degree level (or equivalent level of knowledge and / or experience)
* Registered as a Pharmacy Technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council
* To hold CPPE PCPEP qualification. If not held will need to be complete within 24 months.
* An appropriate accredited technician checking qualification.
* Evidence of relevant continuing professional development.


Experience and knowledge

* Experience of working in primary care, or with primary care teams
* Experience of co-ordinating and prioritising daily workloads
* Previous relevant experience working in Pharmacy
* Previous experience of managing/supervising staff
* Knowledge of or experience in coaching and mentoring practices and tools
* Knowledge of or experience in Quality improvement tools, techniques and methods


Other requirements

* It is an essential requirement of the role that the post holder has a valid driving licence and is either a car owner and able to use the car for work purposes, or has a Trust personal lease vehicle which may be used for the role. However, the Trust would consider making reasonable adjustments to the role, if necessary, to enable a disabled person to undertake the role
