About the Role
We are seeking an experienced and compassionate Independent Reviewing Officer to join our Fostering Team on a part‑time basis. This vital role focuses on ensuring high standards of care and safeguarding for children placed with foster carers by independently reviewing fostering arrangements and providing critical oversight of care plans.
You will work closely with foster carers, children, social workers, and other professionals to ensure compliance with statutory requirements and promote the best outcomes for children in foster care.
Key Responsibilities
* Chair fostering reviews to evaluate the suitability, progress, and outcomes of fostering arrangements.
* Ensure the child’s voice is central to decision‑making and that their welfare is the primary consideration.
* Review compliance with the Fostering Services (England) Regulations 2011, the National Minimum Standards, and the Children Act 1989/2004.
* Provide independent scrutiny of fostering arrangements and elevate concerns where necessary.
* Work collaboratively with social workers, fostering support teams, and other professionals to promote effective care planning.
* Offer advice and guidance to foster carers and professionals to improve practice and outcomes.
* Prepare detailed review reports and recommendations, ensuring accurate and timely record‑keeping.
* Contribute to the development of policies and procedures to improve fostering services.
Requirements of the Independent Reviewing Officer
* A recognised qualification in Social Work (e.g., BA/MA Social Work, Diploma in Social Work, or equivalent).
* Registration with Social Work England (SWE) as a qualified social worker.
* Experience in children’s social work, particularly in assessment, intervention, and safeguarding.
* A solid understanding of relevant legislation, including the Children Act 1989 and Working Together to Safeguard Children.
* Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to engage with children and families sensitively and effectively.
* Strong analytical and assessment skills, with the ability to make sound professional judgements based on evidence.
* Ability to work well under pressure, manage competing demands, and prioritise tasks effectively.
