Location: Remote (UK), with occasional presence at our state-of-the-art labs in Bristol, UK. While the role is primarily remote, we expect on-site visits approximately once every couple of weeks to support infrastructure maintenance, laptop setups, and other ad hoc technical needs. The Role This role spans three core pillars: Infrastructure: operating and maintaining Linux systems across cloud and on-prem environments Enterprise IT: managing users, devices, and access for a growing company Security: designing and operating pragmatic security controls and responding to incidents You will be responsible for designing, building, hardening, monitoring, and responding to issues across a small number of critical systems. This is not a SOC role and not a narrowly scoped cloud security position - you will work hands-on with Linux servers, enterprise devices, networking, infrastructure, and a mixture of open-source and closed tooling in a high-trust, low-process environment. We expect candidates to have strong hands-on experience, but we are open to different seniority levels depending on breadth and depth. As an integral part of our team, you will work towards maintaining, developing and improving GenomeKey’s security, infrastructure and monitoring posture. Your responsibilities will include: Own and operate Linux servers for cloud and on-prem (primarily Debian/Ubuntu) Design and maintain secure, reliable infrastructure Own patching, lifecycle management, and decommissioning Implement monitoring, alerting, and logging for systems and services Diagnose and resolve system and application issues Automate routine operational and security tasks Own and maintain enterprise user lifecycle management (onboarding, offboarding, access changes) Support engineers and lab staff with secure workstation and access setup Design host-level security controls Implement intrusion detection and audit logging Respond to and investigate security incidents Continuously improve security posture Qualifications & Experience We are open to varied backgrounds for this role. Key: Degree or equivalent professional experience in Computer Science, Cyber‑Security, Information Technology. Hands-on experience administering Linux servers in production Comfort troubleshooting systems at the OS, network, and application level Experience designing and operating monitoring and alerting Ability to work independently and make architectural decisions Experience with security monitoring tools (e.g., SIEM platforms like CrowdStrike, Wazuh, or similar). Experience implementing security controls on Linux hosts Understanding of incident response in small environments Ability to reason about threat models and mitigations Desirable: Relevant cybersecurity, cloud or infrastructure certifications Knowledge of containerisation (Docker, Kubernetes) and securing CI/CD pipelines. Prior experience working in a startup or fast‑paced tech environment. Experience writing or maintaining security policies, training materials, or compliance documentation. Experience with ISO 27001, operating within a QMS, or similar regulatory frameworks.
