Systems Engineer – Directed Energy / Laser Weapon Systems
Location: Bristol
Salary: Circa £55,000 (depending on experience)
Working model: Hybrid – typically 2–4 days per week on-site
Join a leading defence technology organisation working on one of the UK’s most ambitious and high-profile programmes – DragonFire, the nation’s first Laser Directed Energy Weapon (LDEW) system. This pioneering initiative has already demonstrated remarkable success in recent trials and continues to push the boundaries of modern weapon system design.
As a Systems Engineer, you will play a key role in advancing DragonFire from concept demonstrator to a fully deployable, world-class air defence system. You’ll work within a multidisciplinary engineering environment, engaging in activities such as requirements analysis, system design, performance assessment, and certification.
What you’ll be doing:
* Analysing system requirements and functional interfaces to create detailed design documentation.
* Conducting system-level trade studies and providing impact assessments for design changes.
* Collaborating closely with cross-functional teams and external partners to ensure technical coherence and delivery quality.
* Supporting change management processes and maintaining system management plans.
What we’re looking for:
* Proven background in Systems Engineering within complex or defence-related programmes.
* Strong analytical and documentation skills, with the ability to translate requirements into robust designs.
* Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
* A proactive and adaptable mindset, with a passion for innovation and problem-solving.
