Overview
We are looking for an enthusiastic Band 6 nurse to come and work in our Paediatric department. The department includes Starlight Ward (inpatient ward), Paediatric Short Stay Unit, Sunshine (day case unit) and our Children\'s Outpatient department. If you are a Band 5 looking for a new challenge or an experienced Band 6 nurse looking for new opportunities then West Middlesex University Hospital is for you. We offer professional development study days and you will be given the opportunity to enrol on an HDU course accredited by a London University. Whether you\'re an experienced Band 6 nurse or new to the role, you will be fully supported and developed by our Paediatric Practice Development Nurse and cross site Education team. The post holder will be clearly identifiable as a senior clinical staff member and team leader.
Responsibilities
* Have significant clinical experience and provide sound clinical expertise to their team.
* Coordinate and deliver high quality care acting as a role model for expert clinical care.
* Lead on specific projects / management functions as delegated.
* Be a role model for the identified Trust values at all times.
* In general settings, be the assigned deputy for their manager, coordinating clinical, managerial and education requirements for the area, as well as being a role model for team members. Deliver and oversee high standards of care.
* In specialist settings, have a significant level of specialist clinical knowledge and expertise in the clinical functions of care delivery; provide advice and guidance to junior staff and students.
* Lead on assessing, planning and implementing high quality care, and evaluating care options for patients in the clinical area, in line with the Trust values and objectives.
* Lead on complex clinical care for patients within their area.
* Ensure the safe custody, maintenance and administration of medication, in accordance with established Trust policy.
* Promote and maintain a safe therapeutic environment for patients, families and staff, according to national and local Infection Control guidelines, Health & Safety legislation and Trust policies and objectives.
* Coordinate discharges and transfers, promoting timely and safe processes for them.
* Ensure that patient flow and bed management is effective and safe.
* Deliver high quality end of life care in line with national pathways through holistic palliative and terminal care.
* Provide sound evidence based clinical advice as required to staff and patients.
* Maintain an understanding and implementation of clinical escalation procedures as required.
* Understand the Trust clinical governance framework, participate in promoting and safeguarding high standards of care through effective risk management and governance, and adherence to the Trust values.
* Ensure the team promotes, adheres to the Trust safeguarding policies.
* Undertake multi professional work with colleagues to deliver care.
* Coordinate specialist functions, including making clinical decisions where appropriate.

* Participate in ordering and maintaining adequate stock levels and work with the team to deliver a quality service.
* Report all complaints, incidents or incidents to the Nurse in charge and take appropriate action.
* Work shift patterns and weekends to suit service delivery.
* Participate in the education of all learners within their area; support preceptorship and supervision including mentorship where appropriate.
* Identify and respond to learning needs for the area; develop and deliver or organise local training sessions mindful of Trust values; facilitate others in developing informal teaching skills; participate in annual training needs analysis.
* Participate in local or related research projects, apply and encourage evidence based practice; identify areas of nursing/midwifery research and educate staff on its importance; participate in clinical supervision and act as supervisor.
Management and leadership
* Manage day to day staffing arrangements and rotas to ensure safe levels of practice.
* Be a shift coordinator on a regular basis where appropriate.
* Ensure staff adhere to Trust protocols of care (eg Infection Control).
* Take continuing responsibility for the Ward/Department in the absence of the manager.
* Participate in senior nurse/unit on-call rota/bleep holder (where appropriate).
* Lead and manage their own clinical team and the total team in the absence of the manager, in line with Trust values.
* Develop and maintain effective communication with other professional groups and staff across the Division and the Trust.
* Contribute to effective area management by ensuring adequate staffing and assisting with off-duty rotas; assist in induction/orientation of new staff; act as a role model and supervise staff and learners.
* Provide clinical support, guidance and a resource for clinical knowledge; initiate action on complaints & incident management and assist in investigations.
* Participate in recruitment and selection; develop effective interviewing skills; undertake staff appraisals; chair team meetings as required.
* Lead on specific projects as agreed with the manager; have working knowledge of local budget Arrangements; manage local change and embed new projects.
Communication and relationship building
* Know and utilise Trust values in all working relationships with patients, carers and staff.
* Demonstrate leadership and ensure effective communication between patients, relatives and the multidisciplinary team; ensure appropriate nursing input into care discussions.
* Use communication to support patient care, including clinical incident reporting when necessary.
* Communicate handover of care professionally; be polite, courteous and sensitive to patients, visitors and colleagues; respect individuality and rights in line with Trust values.
* Work cohesively with all ward team members to provide the best possible services to patients; work effectively within a multi-racial and cultural environment.
* Ensure communications are appropriate to the recipient, considering language, culture and health conditions.
