We are looking to welcome a new colleague to join an enthusiastic, motivated and supportive Emergency Department team. You will work in the Emergency Department at Victoria Hospital, Kirkcaldy, which opened in 2012. The department has an annual attendance of 68,000, of which 25% are paediatric cases.
MAIN PURPOSE OF THE ROLE
1. To support the delivery of undergraduate and postgraduate education within the emergency department
2. To ensure that critical delivery components occur through coordination and facilitation
3. Flexible delivery of education
4. To engage in personal development in relation to medical education
5. Develop a wide-ranging understanding of educational theory and teaching methodology which could complement the PGCE or PGDE
6. To continue clinical development and contribute to patient care
The post is aimed at clinicians 4 years post foundation who wish to broaden their clinical experience, deliver high-quality teaching to medical students, and receive excellent training in Emergency Medicine. 60% of the time will be spent providing direct clinical care with a balance of social and anti-social shifts. The remaining 40% will support the ED’s educational and medical student programmes, including workplace-based and simulation training for students from St Andrew’s, ScotGEM, Dundee medical programmes, and an extensive junior doctor training schedule.
You will work alongside other Specialty trainees and higher specialty trainees in Emergency Medicine from the South East and East of Scotland training rotations. Successful applicants will work at a middle grade level on a rota providing 24-hour middle grade cover under consultant supervision, including overnight and weekend work. The rota is self-rostered with consultant oversight. Responsibilities include initial assessment and management of ED patients, supervision of FY2s and GPSTs, and opportunities to develop observational medicine and ultrasound skills under direct supervision.
Senior fellows participate in patient assessment, management, and supervision of FY2s, GPSTs, and ENPs across all department areas. Opportunities include observational medicine and participation in observation ward rounds.
The department features an 8-bay resuscitation area, a 9-bay majors area, a 6-bay minors area, two paediatric consulting rooms, a dedicated procedures room, and a 6-bed Emergency Medicine Observation Unit primarily for toxicology and head injury cases. Electronic pathology and radiology ordering are available. Departmental guidelines, protocols, and rotas are accessible online. The department performs well in sepsis management, stroke thrombolysis, and meeting the 4-hour target.
The ED has 24-hour senior doctor coverage, with 21 Consultant Emergency Physicians (18.5 WTE), including daily shop floor presence from 0800 to 2300. Five GPwSIs deliver sessions in the evenings and weekends. 24-hour ENP coverage supports minors flow.
Additionally, there is a 16-hour ENP-led Minor Injuries Unit at Queen Margaret Hospital in Dunfermline, supported by senior ED doctors.
Applications from those seeking flexible working arrangements are encouraged.
