Job Summary
We are seeking 1.2 WTE motivated and enthusiastic optometrists to join Newcastle Eye Centre. The post offers an exciting opportunity to develop clinical skills and progress clinical interest in a hospital setting. It will provide experienced optometrists with hospital experience a chance to work life in a busy, fast‑paced hospital clinic and to gain clinical relevant to the higher qualifications offered by the College of Optometrists.
Main Duties
* Actively involved in the core optometry service and undertake rotations through glaucoma, medical retina and cataract services, along with regular sessions in the eye emergency department.
* Develop skills in low visual aid assessment, specialist contact lenses and paediatric assessment.
* Work as an independent practitioner and as part of a multidisciplinary team, providing an extensive range of advanced Optometric services to the highest standards of quality and care.
* Provide specialist education and training at postgraduate level to qualified and pre‑registration Optometrists and multiple disciplines in Ophthalmology.
* Support the trust’s preceptorship scheme and meet the challenges that a newly qualified health professional can face.
Qualifications – Band 7
* Registered Optometrist.
* Postgraduate qualification continuing education and training to Masters level.
* Highly developed specialist knowledge, e.g. Diploma in Ocular Therapeutics, Diploma in Glaucoma, accredited slit lamp examiner under Diabetic Retinal Screening programme.
* Ability to practice at a level comparable to a Specialist Registrar doctor, including clinical history taking and ocular examination skills.
* Extensive post‑registration experience, some of which will be at a senior level within the required specialist area of practice.
* Evidence of ongoing continuous professional development and research and audit experience.
Qualifications – Band 6
* BSc in Optometry plus postgraduate qualification Continuing Education and Training (CET).
* Registered with the General Optical Council.
* Good written and verbal communication skills and flexible approach to working patterns.
* Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team with a physical ability to perform all necessary Optometric duties.
* Well motivated and enthusiastic with IT skills including word‑processing and use of spreadsheets and databases.
Desirable (Band 7 & Band 6)
* Management experience or qualification.
* Full driving licence.
* Experience of teaching and previous employment in Hospital Eye Service.
* Previous involvement in clinical/medical audit.
Contract & Working Pattern
Permanent, Full‑time, Part‑time.
Salary
£38,682 to £54,710 a year pro rata.
