£56,509 to £62,159. The band minimum is the normal starting pay for those new to a role. In exceptional circumstances, when relevant skills and experience can be identified, a higher starting salary may be considered.

British Antarctic Survey (BAS) is looking for an exceptional Engineering Project Lead to join our Engineering and Technology team. BAS delivers and enables world‑leading interdisciplinary research in the Polar Regions. You’ll be joining our Engineering and Technology Team.
You’ll help us deliver solutions to reduce our carbon emissions from scientific instruments deployed in remote locations in the polar regions. Our field‑deployed scientific instruments include automatic weather stations, GNSS devices for tracking ice shelf drift, cameras for monitoring glacier flow, penguin weighbridges, and magnetometers to measure fluctuations in the Earth’s magnetic field. These instruments may be left in the field for several years between visits, and so a reliable means of powering them, accessing data and minimising the need for maintenance are essential to minimise the carbon emissions associated with operating and maintaining them.
Within the role, there will be an opportunity to develop your skills in managing engineering projects, managing teams and advance your technical skills in developing systems for extreme environments. You will have the opportunity to develop new and improved technical solutions in our workshops and to test these in the polar environment yourself. You will get to see the impact of your work on our scientific research which addresses issues of global importance.
The project you will lead will assess the expected improvements in technologies such as renewable power generation, battery energy storage, satellite connectivity and low power electronic engineering approaches. The solutions you and the team will develop will range from incremental improvements to unproven new approaches. We expect to grow the team working on low-carbon field instruments and you will be a key part of this growing team.
