Job Description
Purpose of the Role:
* To support the WH Smith Commercial business in the UK to deliver its plans and targets by providing actionable, data-led, insights and recommendations using a combination of internal and external data sets.
* The team’s objective is to enable the Executive Team to make informed, evidence-based choices, which are supported by a sound understanding of both our internal metrics and external context.
* The successful candidate will combine curiosity, analytical rigour, and commercial sensibility to support senior decision makers and to influence tactical and strategic thinking.
* The ability to think creatively, problem solve, work independently, and respond to changing priorities in a rapidly evolving environment is essential.
* This is not about the management of data. It is about interpreting that data to drive action.
What you’ll do:
* Report to the Head of Insight and become the expert on our commercial performance. Provide detailed analysis on the performance of trials, commercial initiatives, and broader category / store themes
* Undertake analysis and ad-hoc research of market, customer, and broader retail trends, delivering findings to senior leaders across the business
* Work closely with the trading and commercial finance teams to provide insights into trials, promotional changes, and detailed performance reviews of initiatives
* Present findings in a clear and understandable manner to a variety of audiences, both orally and in writing
* Generate and deliver regular weekly, monthly, and quarterly reporting
* Provide ad-hoc support to the business on the ‘topics of the day’
* Respond pro-actively and enthusiastically to changing priorities and competing demands
Who you are:
* Strong analytical background with experience of turning data into insight
* High level Excel skills and knowledge of SQL with experience in creating reports and analytics. Power BI experience useful
* Problem-solver capable of developing bespoke and evolving approaches to analytical questions using variety of data sources
* Confident communicator with the ability to articulate and influence the output of your analysis and challenge both the approach and results where necessary
* Proactive self-starter comfortable in a fast-paced and changing environment with an eye for detail
* Great stake holder management
* Experience of market share software and data desirable (Kantar / Nielsen / GFK)
