Waste Assessor
Location: Tockwith, North Yorkshire

Key Responsibilities
* Waste Assessment & Classification:
o Provide timely technical assessments of waste enquiries by accurately characterising and classifying waste materials.
o Liaise with clients to gather the information needed to help prepare quotations and generate waste collection documentation, packing instructions and labels.
o Verify waste descriptions, EWC codes, and supporting documentation (LoW codes, SDS, WM3 assessments, consignment notes).
o Conduct WM3‑compliant hazard property assessments (HP4, HP6, HP8, HP10, HP14 etc.).
o Assist in routing waste to appropriate treatment, recovery, or disposal outlets.
* Documentation & Duty of Care:
o Check and validate Duty of Care paperwork, consignment notes, and transfer notes.
o Ensure all waste movements comply with permit conditions and legal requirements.
o Maintain accurate digital and paper records for audit readiness.
o Support the creation of WM3 assessments, sampling plans, and classification reports.
* Sampling & Testing:
o Take representative samples in line with technical guidance.
o Prepare samples for laboratory analysis (chemical, physical, and ecotoxicity testing).
o Interpret laboratory results and convert them into WM3 hazard property outcomes.
o Update waste acceptance criteria (WAC) and internal classification databases.
* Operational Support:
o Work closely with the transfer station, yard staff, and transfer chemist to ensure safe and efficient waste handling.
o Provide technical guidance to operatives on segregation, contamination, and hazard controls.
o Provide holiday cover for the transfer station.
* Compliance & Environmental Protection:
o Ensure all activities align with the site Environmental Permit, management system, and EA guidance.
o Support internal audits, EA inspections, and corrective action plans.
o Identify and report environmental risks, non‑compliances, and near misses.
o Promote best practice in pollution prevention, spill response, and safe waste handling.
Qualifications & Experience
* Educated to degree level in Chemistry or closely related subject
* Experience in waste management, environmental compliance, or laboratory work.
* WAMITAB, CIWM, or equivalent qualifications (desirable).
* Knowledge of hazardous waste regulations and WM3 (essential).
* Full UK driving licence.
This is a full time, permanent role working 40 hours per week, 8:30am-5pm Mon - Thurs and 8am-4:30pm Fri.
