Main duties of the job
* Opportunity within the Paediatric Team caring for children aged 0-18 years. Seeking enthusiastic, compassionate, and dedicated support workers.
* Work in the Children’s Assessment Unit & Clinic area, with exposure to the Emergency Department alongside registered nurses.
* Integral member of the ward/department team responsible for delivering fundamental care under the supervision of a registered nurse.
Job responsibilities
In accordance with individual care plans, meet the hygiene needs of babies and children, which may include activities such as:
* Respect the privacy, dignity and beliefs of babies, children, parents and carers during care.
* Work in a person‑centred way respecting preferences, wishes, and needs.
* Eye care
* Washing and dressing
* Monitor skin state and inspect pressure areas.
* Treat all individuals with courtesy, compassion and kindness while attending to care needs.
* Report and document all patient care activities, including improvements, deterioration and changes.
Elimination Needs
* Assist with baby and child elimination needs, including nappy changes and monitoring skin state.
* Complete fluid balance charts and documents related to elimination.
* Recognise and report changes to babies’ elimination needs.
* Assist patients to use appropriate toilet facilities, mobilisation, or commode/bedpan.
* Assist with hygiene before and after toilet use or incontinence episodes.
* Complete fluid balance documentation.
Nutritional and Hydration Needs
* Assist in maintaining babies and children’s nutrition, including bottle feeding and breastfeeding support.
* Support lactation by teaching mothers to express milk by hand or pump.
* Weigh babies and record weight.
* Undertake nasogastric tube feeds when trained and competent.
* Assist patients to eat and drink, including meeting hygiene requirements.
* Monitor, record and report weight, food, fluid intake and fluid balance.
End of Life Care
* Assist in caring for the dying baby or child.
* Support families during end‑of‑life care.

Experience and Knowledge
* Experience in a healthcare environment.
* Children’s healthcare experience.
* Understanding of the Data Protection Act.
Qualifications and Professional Training
* Minimum of 3 GCSE grades A‑D, including maths and English.
* Functional Skills Numeracy Level 1 and 2.
* Functional Skills Literacy Level 1 and 2.
* Basic IT skills.
* Care Certificate.

* Remain calm under a range of circumstances.
* Communicate clearly, both verbally and in writing.
Personal Qualities
* Ability to work the required hours.
* Assist patients to move using appropriate aids on a frequent basis.
* Transport patients using wheelchair, trolley or bed on a frequent basis.
* Ability to push or pull beds, trolleys and move equipment.
* Good previous health record (subject to Occupational Health clearance).
