Overview
We are looking to appoint a Community Consultant Paediatrician. This is an opportunity to join the enthusiastic and friendly paediatric department in Wigan. There are close links between the community and acute paediatric services, with some colleagues conducting hybrid roles across both settings. There are no acute paediatric or on‑call commitments with these posts.
Workload and Experience
The locality community paediatric workload will involve the assessment and management of children with neurodevelopmental difficulties. Experience in the management of ADHD, ASD, ASD panels, learning difficulties and associated comorbidities is necessary. Close working relationships exist with colleagues in community services, the North West Boroughs NHS Healthcare Foundation Trust, education and social care. Safeguarding on calls are currently being done by acute paediatric consultants and community paediatric consultants; those interested may take this on in their role.
Patient Sites
The appointee will see patients in a variety of outpatient settings, including Thomas Linacre, Leigh Infirmary, Platt Bridge, Ashton community sites, Claire House, and special schools (Hope School, Rowan Tree Primary School, Willow Grove Primary School). Visiting clinics in cardiology, rheumatology, neurology, nephrology and urology are held by specialists from the tertiary children’s hospitals in the region.
Additional Information
Paediatric surgical facilities are on the RAEI site, as is the A&E Department for the Wigan and Leigh district. This has been redeveloped to include a self‑contained paediatric emergency care centre. All acute children’s admissions are seen here, with an assessment area comprising eight cubicles.
