F2F General Practitioner, Out of Hours Service

GP

Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust has been rated as Good by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

We are a responsive and innovative Foundation Trust that places our values of Caring, Safe and Excellent at the heart of everything we do. We take great pride in our staff and believe that investing in you is key to us achieving our vision of outstanding care delivered by outstanding people.

We work with a wide range of partner organisations to deliver care and support to people in their own homes and from a number of hospitals and community bases. We focus on delivering care as close to home as possible.

Job overview

This is a rare opportunity for interested GPs to join our overnight team in the GP Out of Hours service for Oxfordshire.

Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust's (OHFT) Primary, Community and Dental Care Directorate comprises of several services which provide same day, acute and urgent care to patients, close to, or where possible, in their own home as a safe alternative to secondary care. One of these is the Out of Hours service (OOH) which provides urgent primary care to patients across Oxfordshire when normal primary care is closed.

Working as a GP and part of a multi-disciplinary team, your role will be varied, interesting, and ultimately rewarding providing urgent care to patients in the out of hours period for shifts that will entail face to face care either in a base clinic location, at the patient’s home (home visiting) and/or remote telephone consultations from a trust location.

This is a substantive and on-site role for a minimum of 17 hours per week (plus CPD) and up to full time hours if supported by shift times and length of shift - flexible hours can be considered that fit within the service model. Shifts are 9 hours in length (including unpaid breaks) available on most weekday and weekend nights and can be combined with other shifts during the day where available and up to full time hours.

Main duties of the job

As a F2F GP working in the OOH service, your priority will be to assess, treat and manage patients presenting to the OOH service requiring same day urgent care that cannot wait for when normal primary care is open.

Working out of a base location, you will be required to care for patients from birth through to those patients requiring end of life care. Skills and experience in managing patients that are acutely unwell are essential as well as recognition of illness that requires further intervention from primary care, community and social services or secondary care.

This is a hands-on role and experience of palliative care and urinary catheterisation would also be helpful when working as a GP in the OOH service, but further learning and training can be provided.

You will also provide senior medical support and advice to non-medical practitioners working as part of the MDT in the OOH service and work in an integrated way with other same day and urgent care services provided by OHFT.

As part of this role you will also be required to support and supervise trainee GPs and non-medical practitioners and undertake research and clinical audit.

In all areas, you will be working with excellent multidisciplinary teams and benefit from an extensive programme of work we are undertaking to improve our systems and processes so that you feel supported and remain focused on your clinical work.

Working for our organisation

We are therefore keen to recruit additional sessional (bank) or salaried GPs to our team that are at any stage of their career and can work any number of hours up to full time. This may be colleagues who have recently completed GP training or GPs that are further along in their career and wish to develop their portfolio career or are simply looking for a new challenge. We can offer an individually tailored induction programme to help you settle into your role followed by ongoing professional support from case review and peer feedback, all of which is designed to help you become an experienced and skilled OOH clinician.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

This is an exciting and rare opportunity to join the Out of Hours (OOH) service in Oxfordshire and be part of a wider team providing community based urgent care that is both innovative and integrated. As an Out of Hours GP, working for the people of Oxfordshire, your role will be varied, interesting, and ultimately rewarding.

As part of an agreed job plan, the substantive post holder will work in the OOH service during the overnight period, which may also be combined with shifts scheduled for weekday evenings and weekends where available.

Working out of one of our base locations across Oxfordshire, they will use their clinical expertise and professional knowledge to work within a multi-disciplinary team to deliver an urgent care service (when normal primary care is closed) that is of high quality and ensures excellent patient centered care. Shifts can be of varying length and type providing appropriate urgent and same day care within a clinic base or home visiting setting. As part of the role, the appointed GP may also be required to provide medical support and advice to our Single Point of Access (SPA) and other same day services operated by OHFT.

This is a countywide service, and although a usual working base will be agreed with each successful candidate, there may be a requirement to work out of other base sites or Trust offices – these include bases in Banbury, Bicester, Oxford, Witney, Abingdon, and Henley (travel/mileage costs will be reimbursed as per Trust policy).

As part of this role, there will also be a requirement to support learning and development needs of GP trainees and non-medical practitioners. There will also be opportunities to undertake further learning and development and requirements to complete clinical audits.
