Studio PDP is seeking a Building Regulations Principal Designer to work within and alongside our design teams. Our team provides consultancy services related to CDM and Building Regulations, supporting both in-house and external projects. The role primarily focuses on building regulations but also supports our Health and Safety Director.
We believe a design-oriented architectural practice is ideal for delivering proactive principal designer services that address project challenges. Our goal is to clarify complex regulatory requirements for clients and design teams, considering the broader construction industry context.
Key Responsibilities
* Advise project teams and clients on Building Regulations and CDM requirements, fulfilling the duties of a principal designer.
* Collaborate with clients to implement and maintain appropriate management arrangements for Building and CDM Regulations.
* Support and guide design teams to promote best practices, applying the principles of prevention in design.
* Review projects to ensure proportionate compliance with pre-construction regulations.
* Identify and manage hazards related to CDM scope.
* Conduct site visits and prepare detailed reports as needed.
* Develop guidance materials on regulatory principles.
* Provide training to internal and external teams.
* Understand the scope and application of Building Regulations and Approved Documents across various projects.
* Assess the competency of designers and contractors regarding skills, knowledge, and experience.
* Liaise with enforcing authorities when necessary.
Skills, Knowledge, and Expertise
Candidates should demonstrate:
* Knowledge of construction industry practices related to design and procurement.
* Qualification to ARB, CIAT, or CIOB standards.
* Membership of APS is a plus.
* Progress towards or existing registration as a competent Building Regulations Principal Designer.
* At least 5 years’ experience as a Principal Designer under CDM across various sectors and building types.
* Ability to present and motivate large groups.
* Vision for future human interaction with design and built environments.
* Training on the Building Safety Act and related legislation.
* Understanding of Approved Documents and their application is advantageous.
* Experience with CDM across multiple project sectors.
* Self-motivated team player.
* Proficiency with MS Office and BIM tools.
* Excellent communication skills.
* Project management experience in consultancy services.
* Knowledge of risk management and the new building control regime, including HRB gateway process, is beneficial.
