Senior Mechanical Engineer
Location: Derby City Centre & Surrounding Areas
Hours: 37 hrs per week
Role Type: Full Time)
Pay: PAYE £36.00/hr | UTR £46.40/hr
Purpose of the Role
The purpose of this role is to lead mechanical engineering activities across a diverse portfolio of Council-owned buildings, working closely with schools and other organisations responsible for maintenance. The role ensures that mechanical systems are maintained, compliant with statutory and regulatory standards, and optimised for safe, efficient operation.
You will play a key role in supporting the Council's building programme, providing engineering expertise, inspection, reporting, and guidance on mechanical systems including heating, ventilation, air-conditioning, and other building services.
Key Accountabilities / Responsibilities
* Provide heating and mechanical design services as required to support the Council's building programme
* Deliver design, contract administration, and maintenance services for mechanical systems in Council buildings or similar projects
* Conduct site and condition surveys of mechanical services and installations
* Produce detailed reports including defect diagnosis, priority recommendations, costings, and identification of legislative breaches
* Ensure mechanical systems are designed and maintained in compliance with health & safety requirements, including energy and water conservation considerations
* Supervise contractors during installation phases, monitoring progress, technical content, and quality of workmanship
* Ensure compliance with quality standards and monitor their application on site
* Consult with statutory bodies, utilities, and external stakeholders where required
* Work with schools and other organisations with maintenance responsibilities for Council-owned buildings (or other buildings) to ensure that such sites are aware of their maintenance needs and priorities
* Support the implementation of preventive and reactive maintenance strategies to optimise system performance and reliability
Skills & Experience
* Substantial experience in a senior mechanical engineering role, including planned preventative and reactive maintenance
* Proven ability to conduct inspections, surveys, and technical reporting on mechanical installations
* Experience in design, contract administration, and supervision of mechanical systems
* Strong knowledge of statutory compliance requirements and health & safety legislation relevant to building services
* Excellent communication skills, able to engage with contractors, internal teams, schools, and regulatory bodies
* Professional, methodical, and capable of working independently at senior level
Qualifications
* Higher National Certificate (HNC) or Higher National Diploma (HND) in Mechanical Engineering required.
* Relevant professional experience to demonstrate competence at senior level in mechanical engineering
* Membership or working towards membership of a recognised professional body (e.g., CIBSE, IMechE) is desirable
