Overview
Senior Transport Modeller (Cross-modal Modelling) role at Department for Transport (DfT), United Kingdom. Transport modelling has a vital role in the development of strategy, policy and informing investment decision-making. The post holder will develop and apply cross-modal transport models, including traditional 4-step, agent-based and activity-based methods, and contribute to the Department’s modelling guidance.
The role requires prior experience in developing or applying models using programming languages in complex analyses. A willingness to learn new programming languages (e.g., Python) and modelling techniques (e.g., activity-based modelling) is essential.
Responsibilities
* Undertaking bespoke analysis to enhance modelling methods and support wider DfT analytical needs.
* Presenting and communicating complex data and analyses, including creating visualisations (e.g., GIS).
* Advising on specific modelling issues to DfT customers and external transport modelling professionals.
* Working with policymakers involved in national schemes and strategies, where modelling and analysis inform transport business cases across the country.
* Commissioning modelling and research from external consultants, project managing their work, assuring outputs and meeting requirements.
* Overseeing and delivering research to enhance modelling methods in line with the Department’s Transport Analysis Guidance (TAG).
About you
You will need to demonstrate the following experience:
* Analytical experience in developing and applying models to solve complex problems (e.g., demand forecasting).
* Experience using programming languages (e.g., Python) in undertaking complex analyses.
* Experience presenting and communicating complex data and analyses clearly to technical and non-technical audiences, including visualisation skills (e.g., GIS).
* Experience in effective project management, including managing complexity, prioritising tasks, handling incomplete data, and ensuring appropriate quality assurance checks.
Qualifications and Requirements
* Experience with cross-modal modelling approaches, including 4-step, agent-based and activity-based methods.
* Willingness to learn new modelling techniques and programming languages.

Salary and Benefits
Salary: National £44,241; London £48,581. An allowance up to £2,000 may be available for eligible candidates (not guaranteed, assessed at appointment).
Civil Service Pension: employer contribution 28.97%
