Why this role matters

This role is accountable for the design of customer-facing DNS capabilities across BT, spanning broadband, mobile and wifi services as well as multiple specialist internal and externally-facing services.



It provides leadership to an immediate team of designers and developers as well as a virtual platform team spanning Delivery, Operations and other stakeholders, owning solutions and providing subject matter expertise across BT Group. In addition, it acts as Product Owner for DNS products within EE, BT and Plusnet Broadband services. Together with colleagues, the role holder develops, scales and operates BT Group’s broadband services to create a brilliant network experience for our customers.



You will have previous experience in a leadership role working for a service provider and have experience of delivering customer facing products at scale.



Ideally you would have run an internal network in a business. Your technical expertise is not so important if you have previously delivered critical services to the end customer.



Experience in DNS would be a plus but not essential, it's your leadership and broader expertise in driving change and your passion for delivery.



This role can be based in Birmingham, London, Bristol, Glasgow or Manchester. Our hybrid working model means you are expected to be in the office 3 days per week.


You'll have the following responsibilities



This is an integral role, over 99% of homes and businesses can connect to BT Group’s broadband and mobile networks. All of our broadband, mobile, wifi and internet services are dependent on DNS – the “phone book” of the internet, and it’s one of the largest DNS platforms in the UK. In this role, you’ll lead the design and development team for a critical service used by over 30 million people every day.



You’ll be leading a team of highly skilled technologists, enabling them to be their very best so that we can continue to lead in network innovation for the UK.



As we continue to transform through use of agile methodologies, new technologies, automation and new products, you’ll be key to shaping and delivering the strategy, inspiring your team as they learn new skills, think in new ways and deliver brilliant customer experiences.



You’ll work as part of a wider leadership team across our Broadband and Networks units to accelerate our modernisation, shape our culture and deliver seamless connectivity.



Responsibilities include:

• Shape DNS Design Team’s strategy to enable the achievement of the ISP tribe and wider BT goals.
• Leadership of DNS Design Team; developing skills and capabilities through inspiring communication, goal setting, mentoring, coaching, knowledge sharing and performance management to support business and personal objectives to create a high performance culture.
• Develop close and effective relationships with customers, vendors, suppliers and colleagues at a senior level, and be able to confidently present information, facilitate negotiations, and provide thought leadership to them.
• Drive transformation of the technology platform and operating model through the adoption of agile methodologies and automated capabilities.
• Forecast supply and demand of resource requirements based on known and unknown business needs.
• Drive development of complex network and software capabilities to create innovative products for our customers.
• Accountable for security and compliance of platforms and services within DNS.
• Accountable for operation of BT’s DNS services.

Skills

• Expertise in DNS, Broadband and Mobile networks.
• Leadership of software and cloud-based developments.
• Understanding of drivers and measurement of customer experience; experience in driving improvement in customer experience.
• Experience in managing agile product development.
• Commercial savviness; budgeting, demand management and vendor management and negotiation.
• Proven ability to build strong working relationships with stakeholders inside and outside the team at all levels of the organisation, including those with different priorities from your own.
• Excellent communication skills and proven ability to influence others at all levels and functions within the business to agree solutions which maximise value for BT Group.
• Ability to lead remote teams and collaborate with remote stakeholders in a highly effective manner.



Experience

• Mandatory: experience of leading highly skilled engineering or software development teams.
• Mandatory: experience of developing and playing a part in the in-life operation of critical large-scale customer-facing networks.
• Mandatory: experience of managing strategic vendor relationships and associated budgets.
• Preferable: experience of designing and operating complex service provider, web scale or broadcast services, including DNS.
• Preferable: experience of agile product development.
• Preferable: expertise in solution architecture.
• Preferable: Roadmap setting or technology architecture experience.
