Primary Purpose of the Role

The Product Manager is responsible for defining, owning, and driving the strategy, roadmap, and lifecycle of Line of Business (LoB) products. Acting as the primary business and customer advocate, this role ensures that products deliver maximum value, meet customer needs, align with Product Policy, and comply with all relevant standards and regulations.

Working closely with the SDA and LoB leadership including engineering, delivery, commercial, and customer facing teams, the Product Manager shapes product direction, prioritises features, and ensures successful delivery from concept through to sustainment. The role requires strong technical awareness, commercial insight, and the ability to balance customer requirements with business strategy, cost, schedule, and risk.

Key Responsibilities & Tasks

Product Strategy & Vision

* Define and maintain the product vision, strategy, and roadmap aligned with business objectives and market needs.
* Analyse customer requirements, market trends, and competitor offerings to inform product direction.
* Ensure product strategy aligns with Product Policy, regulatory requirements, and organisational priorities.

Product Lifecycle Ownership

* Own the full product lifecycle from concept, development, launch, and growth through to sustainment and retirement.
* Lead prioritisation of features and enhancements based on customer value, business impact, and technical feasibility.
* Ensure production, maintenance, and service considerations are embedded into product planning.

Requirements & Solution Definition

* Translate customer needs into clear, actionable product requirements and user stories.
* Work with systems engineering and technical teams to ensure solution feasibility and alignment with product goals.
* Support design reviews, verification, validation, and qualification activities from a product perspective.

Risk, Compliance & Governance

* Identify product risks and opportunities, ensuring appropriate mitigation and exploitation strategies.
* Ensure compliance with safety, security, environmental, and regulatory standards across the product lifecycle.
* Ensure the product development environment supports cost, schedule, and quality objectives.

Stakeholder Engagement & Communication

* Act as the primary interface between customers, engineering teams, commercial teams, and senior leadership.
* Communicate product strategy, roadmap, and priorities clearly across the organisation.
* Lead product related reviews, decision milestones, and cross functional meetings.
* Maintain awareness of emerging technologies and industry developments relevant to the product.

Commercial & Strategic Decision-Making

* Balance customer needs, technical constraints, cost, schedule, and business strategy to make informed product decisions.
* Support business case development, pricing strategies, and go to market planning.
* Provide evidence-based recommendations to guide investment and resource allocation.

Skills, Knowledge & Competencies

Product & Technical Skills

* Strong analytical ability to interpret complex data and draw clear conclusions.
* Ability to understand and communicate technical concepts across domains such as sensors, communications, cyber security, AI/ML, data analytics, electronics, autonomy, and systems engineering.
* Understanding of engineering lifecycles and how they influence product decisions.

Leadership & Communication

* Excellent communication, interpersonal, and technical writing skills.
* Ability to influence, negotiate, and build consensus across multidisciplinary teams.
* Strong presentation skills and confidence engaging with customers and senior stakeholders.
* Highly organised, resilient under pressure, and focused on delivering high quality outcomes.

Professional Experience

* Proven experience in product management, product development, or systems engineering.
* Experience working across the full development lifecycle, including requirements, design, development, and validation.
* Desirable: experience in research, low TRL technology development, or defence related environments.

Qualifications

Essential

* Product Manager Certification

Desirable

* Chartered Engineer or equivalent professional recognition.
* Experience working with defence customers or the Ministry of Defence (MOD).

Clearances

Due to the nature of this role, we require you to be eligible to achieve SC clearance. As a result, you should have resided in the U.K. for the last 5 years for SC.
