Job Summary
West Heath Surgery is a forward thinking and innovative GP practice within West Heath, Birmingham. As part of the SDSmyhealthcare federation, we aim to provide a first class service to our patients with the role of Medical Administrator being vital in this delivery.
The role of a Health Care Assistant at West Heath Surgery involves developing a professional and clinical rapport with our patients whilst carrying out investigative procedures and supporting our patients through their various care journeys in a kind and friendly manner. The post holder also is responsible for assisting the GPs and Practice Nurses in the service and delivery of care management to the Surgery's patients, by carrying out assigned tasks, involving direct nursing care in support of and supervised by a GP or Practice nurse strictly in accordance with service practice guidelines and protocols.
Responsibilities
* Preparing and maintaining environments and equipment before, during and after patient interventions
* Provide Phlebotomy services in accordance with training and procedures
* Ensuring specimens are labelled and bagged ready for collection with the necessary paperwork completed
* Taking physiological measurements from patients including blood pressure, pulse rate, rhythm, temperature, height and weight (body mass index), urinalysis
* To complete new patient registration checks and NHS Health Checks, including completing any necessary paperwork
* To provide simple wound care in accordance with training and procedures
* To notify and communicate with the clinical team regarding any significant patient issues
* To provide lifestyle advice, health promotion and smoking cessation to patients and make any necessary referrals
* Assisting GPs with minor surgery and acting as a chaperone where requested in accordance with local policy
* Clearing and restocking of consulting/treatment rooms
* Carrying out administrative tasks, for example call and recall activities and stock takes
* Strict adherence to infection control in accordance with local and national policies and procedures
Qualifications
Essential
* Basic English/Literacy and Numeracy Skills
* Willingness to achieve mandatory Care Certificate
* Achieved Phlebotomy Competency
* Experience of providing patient care
* Experience of working under indirect supervision
* Understanding the role of a HCSW
* Knowledge of patient confidentiality, data protection and its application
* Ability to work in a team and autonomously as required
* Ability to communicate clearly and precisely (oral and written)
* Organised and diligent with attention to detail
* Ability to work calmly under pressure in a busy working environment while meeting deadlines
* Good interpersonal skills to build and maintain effective relationships with patients and colleagues
* Hard working, motivated and enthusiastic
* Willingness to undertake education and training to meet the service need and for career progression
* Possesses a professional manner
* Genuine interest in the delivery of health care to the community
* Flexibility, reliability and able to respond to change
Desirable
* Level 4 or above in Maths and English (GCSE grade C or above)
* Achieved Care Certificate or NVQ Level 3 in Health and Social Care or equivalent
* Up to date Basic Life Support Training
* Experience of working within a primary care setting
* Previous experience of working as a Health Care Support Worker
* Knowledge of EMIS or other clinical systems
