As Medical Laboratory Assistant, you will play a pivotal role in the delivery of high-quality diagnostic services within our Blood Sciences Specimen Reception Team.

An on-site practical assessment may be required as part of the recruitment process and there is an expectation that the post holder will participate in the delivery of a 24/7 laboratory service.


Main duties of the job

Main Duties of the role:

* Perform sample receipt and data entry.
* Maintain clinical records in relation to activities carried out.
* To work flexibly in reflection of service needs, this may include an extended working day and / or participation in delivery of a 24 hour, 7 days per week service.
* Follow policies and procedures ensuring that the quality management system of Pathology is complied with.
* The work of the service brings staff into constant contact with human body fluids, tissues and hazardous chemicals. This may include blood, pus, urine, faeces, respiratory secretions.
* Post holder must not work outside their defined field of competence.

* Please be aware that the salary threshold required for a certificate of sponsorship to be granted is above the starting point of the Agenda for Change band for this role. Therefore those that are new to the NHS may not reach the minimum salary threshold required to obtain a certificate of sponsorship.
* Due to Home Office immigration rules, a full time permanent vacancy cannot be filled by individuals on a Student visa. Therefore, please be advised that if you are a Student visa holder, we will not be able to offer you a full time permanent contract unless you have:
o applied for a Graduate visa
o or you will have successfully completed your course and have applied for a Graduate visa before the anticipated start date of your employment
o or the Trust has agreed that they will Sponsor you as a Skilled Worker and you will complete your studies within 3 months of the anticipated start date of employment

For NHS Cambridgeshire and Peterborough based roles, all applicants from NHS Cambridgeshire and Peterborough who have identified that they are at risk of redundancy will be prioritised over those not at risk. However, interviews cannot be guaranteed.

Person specification


Qualifications

* GCSE Maths and English (A-C) or equivalent
* GCSE in a Science or equivalent Appropriate NVQ level 3/diploma


Experience

* Demonstrable knowledge of a range of routine and non-routine healthcare science duties equivalent to an NVQ level 3/diploma
* Knowledge of Pathology IT systems
* Knowledge of Quality Management Systems
* Previous relevant experience of working in the NHS / Healthcare


Knowledge

* Demonstrable knowledge of a range of routine and non-routine healthcare science duties equivalent to an NVQ level 3/diploma


Skills

* Willingness to undertake cross training to extend skill set to deliver role.
* Demonstrable interpersonal skills - can work as part of a team.
* Ability to supervise less experienced staff, e.g. can demonstrate own work.
* Ability to concentrate for prolonged periods of time
* Manual dexterity appropriate to activities associated with post
