Job Summary

We have an exciting Band 2 Environmental Cleaner position within the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital (ROH). Working in all areas of the hospital, you will clean to a high standard in line with national cleaning standards. The successful applicant will work off‑site, locally situated, and will be required to work unsociable hours and weekends.


Job Description


Principal Duties and Responsibilities

* Ensure a clean environment for patient care in accordance with Trust local policies, health and safety requirements, NHS National Specification of Cleaning Standards, Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH), and Patient Led Assessments of the Care Environment (PLACE) audits.
* Adhere to Infection Prevention & Control principles, specifically Hand Hygiene and Bare below the Elbow.
* Maintain a high standard of appearance and personal hygiene at all times.
* Perform vacuum cleaning, damp mopping, damp dusting, mirror and internal glass cleaning, sanitary ware cleaning (baths, showers, sinks, toilets, tiled surfaces, paintwork) and high dusting of walls and ceilings.
* Assist with high‑level cleaning above shoulder height, deep clean/terminal cleans, and cleaning during infection outbreaks such as diarrhoea, vomiting, Clostridium difficile, and norovirus.
* Assist Clinical Professionals with removal of body fluids and provide focused cleaning practices in infected areas (Barrier rooms and Bays).
* Assist with legionella flushing of outlets, record updates and report any restricted access.
* Safely empty, clean, and transport commercial waste bins; decant clinical waste bins when needed.
* Follow the cleaning schedule and maintain schedules visible within the area of responsibility.
* Use equipment safely (suction cleaners, vacuums, floor maintenance equipment, mopping systems, carpet cleaning machinery, steam cleaners) and maintain it in compliance with COSHH.
* Store equipment after use and maintain the assigned sluice rooms.
* Sign in/out all keys and maintain accurate records.
* Supply and replace consumables (paper towels, toilet tissue, hand soap, sanitiser dispensers) and control stock levels.
* Adhere to the national colour‑coding system for all work.
* Report defects, repairs, and incidents via the Trust electronic incident reporting system or to the relevant supervisors.
* Attend mandatory training (Manual Handling, Fire, Health & Safety, Infection Control, Environmental Cleanliness) and assist in training staff to meet required standards.


Physical Effort and Working Conditions

* Handling potentially infectious blood and body fluids, often with unpleasant smells/odours.
* Working with a variety of COSHH‑controlled substances.
* Significant manual handling requiring moderate to intense physical effort, including bending and lifting.
* Occasional interaction with distressed patients and carers, possibly demonstrating verbal aggression.
* Use of specialised cleaning equipment such as steam cleaners.


Person Specification


Qualifications and Training

* Good standard of Education and the English Language (no specific qualification required).
* Hold or be working towards an accredited environmental cleaning qualification (or be able to achieve within 6 months of starting).


Experience

* Enjoys working as part of a team.
* Knowledge of NHS National Specification of Cleaning Standards and COSHH.
* Desirable: Knowledge of Patient Led Assessments of the Care Environment (PLACE).


Skills and Knowledge

* Effective communication with patients, relatives, visitors and colleagues.
* Judgement and decision‑making on routine cleaning issues.
* Desirable: Knowledge of cleaning equipment and colour‑coding.
