Overview
Digital Solutions and Digital Infrastructure are responsible for providing, developing and maintaining IT facilities and services across the University, supporting staff and students. We have a good reputation within the University, providing reliable and resilient infrastructure, services, systems and facilities. The Edge Device Team is responsible for the procurement, development and delivery of all edge devices, including 1000 shared use open access computers, 2500 desktop devices, 200 fully equipped teaching spaces and 60 software packages (purchased and created in house). This role as a Edge Device Senior Technician in Digital Infrastructure will work with this team to form part of this delivery.
Members of the team are also expected to work with the Edge Device Team Leader and End User Technology Manager to ensure the service provided is fit for purpose within given budgetary constraints.
Purpose of the Job
A senior member of the team responsible for the supply, management and maintenance of the staff and student desktop/laptop computers and the equipment in teaching spaces across the University.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
1. Support all desktop computers throughout the University including deployment of software, setup and maintenance using enterprise deployment tools; Altiris, Intune and JAMF.
2. Facilitate procurement of desktop and audio-visual hardware within the University ensuring best value and quality by working with suppliers following the university’s procurement policies.
3. Work with other teams in Digital Infrastructure and the broader directorate to continual enhance and develop the services provided to best support the teaching and research needs as well as the needs of professional services.
Setting up and maintaining Windows/Macintosh computers for use in offices, research labs and lecture rooms.
Installation and configuration of Audio-visual equipment into teaching spaces and meeting rooms.
Evaluating new hardware and software for suitability in our environment, provide recommendations and suggest alternatives if not suitable.
4. Provide support and training to the front of house hub team and second line Product support team to ensure best first point of contact resolution for staff and students.
5. Reports to Edge Device Team Leader.

6. Supervision and training of technical staff.
7. Training and arranging training for lower grade technical staff.
8. Maintenance of records relating to expenditure, costings of materials and equipment as directed.
9. Liaise with other departments in the University to ensure requirements are being met.
10. Liaise with external bodies to ensure practices and processes being followed are in line with current industry best practice.
11. Keep current knowledge of particular internal/external regulations, i.e. relating to the computer supply policy, information security and data protection policy and IT acceptable use policy.
12. The post holder will be expected to participate in performance review and developmental activities.

Person Specification
Qualifications/Training
Essential
18. 2 AS Levels or 1 A level or NVQ level 4 in a relevant subject area or equivalent experience.
19. Full UK driving licence.
Desirable
20. A recognised qualification in IT or Computing.
21. Undergraduate degree in a relevant subject.
Experience/Knowledge
Essential
22. Knowledge of Enterprise deployment solutions including Microsoft Intune and / or JAMF.
23. Significant experience with Windows and Mac Operating Systems in an enterprise environment.
In depth knowledge of Microsoft Office 365 applications and management practices.
24. Setting up and maintaining Windows/Mac computers for use in offices, research labs and lecture rooms using enterprise solutions.
25. Experience of investigating or installing audio visual systems for public presentation.
26. Experience of purchasing software and hardware following enterprise procurement processes.
Desirable
27. Knowledge of MS System Centre or Broadcom Altiris.
28. Experience of providing training to colleagues and users of systems developed.
29. Experience of creating scripts for software deployment using Microsoft Powershell.
30. Experience in diagnosing and resolving hardware and software problems
Knowledge of enterprise network setup.
