Job Description

Are you the sort of person who is always looking for better ways to do things, and able to come up with ideas on how to do it?

The business is a well-established manufacturer. They are successful in what they do, but there is a bit of a gap in terms of manufacturing operations and process support.

Which is where you come in.

The new Head of Product Development is looking for some help with this, and there is a huge amount of scope for you to improve processes and find solutions to problems. You’ll be given a lot of responsibility to do this, but he is also from a process background and will be able to guide you on whether something is going to be feasible or not.

The problems you are solving may be as a result of feedback from customers (you’ll be in regular contact with them). Or it could be internal teams, such as quality or warranties, when things are returned.

Maybe a surface is regularly getting scratched.

Or it could be feedback from teams who work on the production line, where items are assembled while passing through different departments. One team may notice that a problem keeps happening - so you’ll investigate, and find the root cause and a solution.

Or maybe a process is slow to complete, so you’ll be looking at ways to make it quicker. For example, it could be that holes are being drilled, but a hole punch could do it quicker.

You get the idea.

There are only 5 products that they make (with some variations), so improvements to processes will be clearly seen, and easy to justify financially.

They also don’t currently have much written down about which processes need to be followed, and how things are done. So the idea is to create some manuals for staff to follow.

You’ll be the one who is putting these together; making sure the information is able to be clearly understood. Maybe adding a few pictures too.

There is also a need for some support on the design side, using CAD to produce drawings and plans. So if you also enjoy this side of things then it could be part of your job (but no problem if not).

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

Clearly, you’ll need to be able to come up with ideas on how to improve things; and be confident enough to put these ideas across.

Your degree should be engineering related, preferably with an element of manufacturing operations or processes.

You’ll need to be happy with hands-on work, getting your hands dirty.

WHERE YOU’LL BE DOING IT

North-west Luton. Commutable from areas including Dunstable, Leighton Buzzard, Houghton Regis, Milton Keynes, and Aylesbury.
