Offer description

Help support a thriving community hub. Horbury Community Centre Trust is seeking a Treasurer Trustee to provide financial oversight for The Cluntergate Centre, home to community groups, theatre and the Horbury District Men’s Shed. Use your finance skills to make a real local impact.

What difference will you make?

The Treasurer will play a vital role in helping Horbury Community Centre Trust remain financially strong and sustainable, ensuring that The Cluntergate Centre can continue to serve the local community.

The Centre is a busy and welcoming community hub used by hundreds of people each week. It provides space for a wide range of activities including community groups, theatre productions, local events and the growing Horbury Men’s Shed project, which supports wellbeing and social connection. The Centre also provides affordable space for local organisations and individuals to meet, learn new skills and take part in community life.

Strong financial oversight is essential for a community charity like ours. Income is generated through a mix of room hire, events and grant funding, and careful financial planning helps ensure that the organisation remains sustainable while keeping activities accessible and affordable for local people.

By joining the board as Treasurer, the new trustee will help ensure that the charity continues to manage its finances responsibly and plan confidently for the future. Their work will help the trustees make informed decisions about how resources are used, how new initiatives can be developed and how the Centre can continue to grow and respond to the needs of the community.

The Treasurer will also play an important role in helping the charity maintain the strong financial governance required by funders and regulators. This supports the organisation’s ability to secure grant funding and invest in improvements to the Centre and its programmes.

Ultimately, the Treasurer’s contribution helps ensure that The Cluntergate Centre remains a vibrant, welcoming and sustainable community space. By supporting the board in maintaining financial stability and planning for the future, the role helps protect and strengthen a resource that brings people together, supports wellbeing and provides opportunities for connection, creativity and participation within the local community.

What are we looking for?

We are looking for someone with experience in finance, accountancy, bookkeeping or financial management who would enjoy supporting a local community charity as Treasurer.

The ideal candidate will feel comfortable reviewing financial information and helping the board understand the organisation’s financial position. They will be able to provide oversight and constructive input on budgeting, financial planning and the long-term sustainability of the charity.

A formal accountancy qualification would be welcome but is not essential. We would be equally pleased to hear from people with relevant practical experience through roles such as finance manager, accountant, bookkeeper, financial controller or similar.

The Treasurer should be able to present financial information clearly and accessibly to fellow trustees who may not have a financial background. An ability to explain financial matters in a straightforward way and contribute to balanced board discussions is particularly valuable.

We are looking for someone who is supportive, collaborative and interested in the wider work of the organisation. Trustees work closely together to guide the charity’s development, so a willingness to contribute to discussions about strategy, sustainability and the future direction of the Centre is important.

Previous experience as a trustee or charity volunteer is not required. We would welcome enquiries from people considering their first trustee role as well as those who have previous board experience.

* Experience or confidence working with financial information
* Good judgement and the ability to think strategically about financial sustainability
* The ability to communicate financial matters clearly to others
* A collaborative and supportive approach to working as part of a board
* An interest in supporting a community organisation that brings people together

We would particularly welcome applications from people who live or work locally, or who have an interest in community development and the role that shared community spaces can play in supporting wellbeing and connection.

Above all, we are looking for someone who is enthusiastic about helping ensure the long-term sustainability of the charity and the continued success of The Cluntergate Centre as an important community resource.

What will you be doing?

We are seeking a Treasurer to join the board of Horbury Community Centre Trust and provide financial oversight as the organisation continues to develop and grow.

Our board is made up of committed local volunteers who bring a range of experience in community engagement, governance and organisational leadership. Trustees work collaboratively with the Centre Manager and staff team to ensure the charity remains sustainable, well governed and able to continue serving the local community.

In recent years the charity has grown significantly, with increased use of The Cluntergate Centre and the development of new activities and partnerships. The Centre now hosts a wide range of regular community groups, theatre productions, local events and the growing Horbury District Men’s Shed project. As the organisation continues to develop, maintaining strong financial oversight is essential to support good decision-making and long-term sustainability.

The Treasurer will work closely with the Chair, Trustees and Centre Manager to monitor the charity’s financial position and help ensure the board has clear and accessible financial information when making strategic decisions.

Key responsibilities include reviewing financial reports for board meetings, supporting the preparation and monitoring of the annual budget, overseeing cashflow and helping the board plan for future investment in the organisation’s activities and facilities. The Treasurer will also liaise with the charity’s independent examiner during preparation of the annual accounts and ensure appropriate financial reporting to the Charity Commission.

The charity already has established financial systems and processes in place, and the Centre Manager oversees the day-to-day administration of the accounts. The Treasurer therefore provides oversight, guidance and strategic financial input rather than being responsible for routine bookkeeping.

This is an exciting time for the organisation as we continue to build on recent progress and strengthen the role of The Cluntergate Centre as a welcoming and vibrant community hub. The Treasurer will play an important role in helping the board plan for the future, make the best use of resources and ensure the charity remains financially resilient as it continues to grow its impact in the community.

The role includes attendance at monthly trustee meetings and occasional involvement in financial planning discussions with the Chair and Centre Manager.
