Job Title: Design Engineer
As a design engineer, you'll develop ideas for new products and production systems. You'll also improve the performance and efficiency of existing products. Candidates will ideally be educated to degree standard and have a minimum of 3 years industrial experience. However, candidates with other qualifications and good experience in the field of engineering design will also be able to achieve design engineer status within SDC.
Responsibilities
1. Design - turning research ideas into detailed designs for production.
2. Re-engineering designs to make them more production-friendly to gain valuable manufacturing time.
3. Reporting - writing or presenting engineering reports on various areas of design.
4. Producing production specifications and engineering drawings.
5. Gaining knowledge of all relevant trailer legislation and applying it to designs.
6. Applying good practice standards with respect to trailer safety and design.
7. Mentoring junior design engineers.
8. Sharing your design experience in review meetings to ensure the customer gets the best solution.
9. Applying Continuous Improvement methodology and understanding Lean Manufacturing principles.

Qualifications and Skills Needed
1. Strong problem-solving skills.

3. Practical hands-on approach.
4. Proficiency in 2D & 3D CAD software, ideally Autodesk products.
5. Proficiency in MS Office and in-house computer systems.
6. Knowledge of design stress/loading calculations and familiarity with FEA.
7. Understanding of fatigue stress and induced stress.
8. Good grasp of engineering and design principles.
9. Understanding of manufacturing processes and construction methods for trailers or similar heavy engineering applications.
10. Awareness of customer needs.
11. Willingness to work outside normal hours.
12. Awareness of the cost impact of design ideas.
13. Excellent communication skills.
14. Ability to produce high-quality designs consistently.
15. Honesty, punctuality, and dependability.
16. Knowledge of health and safety policies.
17. Ability to recognize limits and seek advice when necessary.
18. Legal right to work in the United Kingdom.
