Role: Operations Manager Structural Steel Reports to:Managing Director Hours: 40 hours per week Overview We are seeking a commercially aware and delivery-focused Operations Manager to take overall responsibility for the successful execution of our structural steel projects. This leadership role centres on coordinating the performance of key team membersincluding the Design Manager, Quantity Surveyor, Factory Supervisor, and Erection Supervisorto ensure the seamless delivery of every package from design through fabrication to installation. You wont be managing every detail personally, but you will be accountable for making sure the right people are aligned, the right actions are happening at the right time, and that each department delivers to programme, budget, and quality expectations. Key Responsibilities Project Oversight & Coordination: Take overall accountability for the successful delivery of structural steel projects from design approval to final installation. Oversee the performance of the Design Manager, QS, Factory Supervisor, and Erection Supervisorensuring roles are clear, progress is monitored, and issues are resolved swiftly. Lead internal project coordination meetings, clearly defining priorities and holding team members accountable. Ensure coordination across all departments is proactive and supports delivery targets. Programme Management: Maintain clear oversight of key project milestones across design, procurement, fabrication, and erection. Identify risks to programme and ensure mitigation actions are agreed and implemented promptly. Ensure that factory output and site installation are planned in line with live programme requirements. Commercial Oversight Support the Quantity Surveyor in managing budgets, variations, valuations, and contractual notices. Maintain awareness of cost performance and ensure commercial risks or opportunities are flagged early. Ensure key commercial decisions are made with full understanding of programme, delivery, and margin implications. Design Coordination: Oversee the design management processensuring information is released in a timely, coordinated, and constructible manner. Ensure critical path elements are prioritised and that all departments are working from fully approved drawings. Escalate and resolve delays or technical queries that could affect fabrication or site works. Factory & Site Delivery: Work closely with the Factory Supervisor to ensure production aligns with project timelines and installation requirements. Oversee coordination between fabrication, finishing, transport, and site erectionensuring a seamless flow from factory to site. Monitor the performance of the Erection Supervisor and site teams to ensure safe, efficient, and defect-free installation. Client & Stakeholder Communication: Act as the primary point of contact for clients, main contractors, and consultants throughout project delivery. Represent the company professionally in client and project meetingscommunicating progress, resolving concerns, and capturing key actions. Ensure all key communications and decisions are documented and acted upon. Team Leadership & Culture: Provide strong leadership, setting expectations for performance, accountability, and collaboration. Foster a culture of ownership and proactive problem solving across the structural steel team. Support departmental leads to continuously improve processes, communication, and delivery outcomes. Key qualities were looking for: Proven track record of successfully managing multi-stage projects from technical design through to production and final delivery on-site. Solid understanding of project lifecycles that include drawing approval, workshop/factory output, logistics, and site execution. Strong planning, coordination, and team leadership skills across technical, production, and site-based teams. Commercial awareness with a clear grasp of budgets, timelines, resourcing, and margin control. A confident communicator who builds trust with colleagues, subcontractors, and clients.
