Note: The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual salaries will be set within this range and determined by factors including market data, education, experience, qualifications, and internal equity considerations.
Responsibilities
* Oversees, manages, and provides counsel for various internal and external legal matters (sometimes with outside counsel) including investigations, policy determinations, related internal appeals by employees, agency charges/complaints filed with governmental agencies, litigation, and prelitigation matters.
* Manages legal projects, provides counsel, identifies legal issues to management, and recommends actions, in coordination with the General Counsel, Labor & Employment Practice Group (L&EPG) and L&EPG Leader, and, as appropriate, the Chief Human Resources Officer and their staff, as well as affiliated university entities.
* Produces periodic reports to General Counsel, L&EPG Leader, and senior leadership on statistics related to employee complaints, proceedings, and resolutions.
* Provides legal advice to Human Resources on regulatory inquiries, complaints, audits, and initiatives; reviews personnel policies and suggests necessary policy revisions to reflect changes in the law.
* Develops or assists with legally compliant training materials on labor and employment topics and delivers training as requested.
* Renders legal advice on topics related to labor and employment (e.g., payroll, benefits, ERISA, Title IX, visa and international employment issues, and contract disputes).
* Monitors changes in labor and employment regulations and advises on policy revisions and updates accordingly.
* Coordinates assignment to and work by outside counsel as needed.
* Other duties as assigned, including acting on behalf of the General Counsel in absence or as requested.
Minimum Education & Experience
* Juris Doctorate Required
* At least 10 years of relevant legal experience with depth in labor and employment law; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; Required
* At least 12 years of experience practicing labor and employment law; Required
Knowledge, Skills And Abilities
* Expertise and experience in labor and employment law; Required
* Experience with large, complex employee populations; Required
* Experience with higher education institutions, including faculty matters, health care clients, and unionized employees;
* Experience litigating or managing labor/employment claims; Required
* Excellent written and oral communication skills; Required
* Strong analytical, interpersonal, and cross-cultural competencies; Required
* High level of integrity and professionalism; Required
* Ability to independently manage and prioritize work; Required
* Strong time management and organizational skills; Required
* Ability to work in a collegial environment while meeting deadlines and counseling administrators in challenging situations; Required
Licenses and Certifications
* New York State bar admission or eligibility to work as in-house counsel with commitment to become licensed in NYS upon hire; Required
