Clinical Nurse Specialist for Neuro Oncology and Skull Base

The post holder will play a key role in the neuro oncology and skull base multidisciplinary teams to deliver high quality care to patients. The clinical nurse specialist will be an experienced, registered nurse.They will have a role in the co-ordination and day to day management of brain and CNS tumour patients undergoing surgery to ensure a high standard of service provision. The post holder will provide an information resource, counselling, education and practical support for patients, their families and healthcare professionals.They will work across organisational boundaries and with primary care to ensure a seamless service from diagnosis and throughout the surgical pathway and referring to another speciality treatment centre or discharging of patients.The post holder will be required to foster good working relationships and communicate effectively with all members of the multidisciplinary team and service users to ensure the delivery of high standards of care.The post holder will engage in discussions in multidisciplinary team meetings, where appropriate will present patients, acting as an advocate for all patients with a diagnosis of brain tumours and contributing to adult services where appropriate.They will provide a highly developed specialist knowledge underpinned by theory and experience as per the NICE guidelines.Act in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Council Code of Conduct.


Main duties of the job

Acts as a key worker for a clinical caseload, working to coordinate care and provide easy access for ongoing support for patients.o Perform comprehensive assessment of patient needs, plan, implement and evaluate care delivery according to changing healthcare provision.o Collect, collate, evaluate and report clinical information, maintaining accurate patient and nursing records.o Act as an advocate for individual patients; involve patients and relatives in the planning and delivery of care as well as evaluating the effectiveness of interventions and treatment protocols.

Job responsibilities

Keep accurate patient records and documentation, ensure the patient pathway is co-ordinated and targets met. Organise own specialist workload, working autonomously as needed including education, training and cover. Take responsibility for own learning and performance including participating in team meetings and clinical supervision. Actively promote the workplace as a learning environment, encouraging everyone to learn from each other and from good practice. Use technology and appropriate software as an aid to management in planning, implementation and monitoring of care, presenting and communicating information. To act as a positive role model for nurses and HCA in the hospital through the demonstration of excellent communication and clinical skills. Understand responsibility of self and others to the Trust regarding theFreedom and Information Act.


Person Specification


Qualifications

* Registered Nurse Level one and current NMC registration
* Evidence of ongoing continued professional development
* Mentor qualification or prepared to work towards
* Advanced communication skills training or prepared to work towards
* Masters level Clinical Examination module
* Post-basic qualification in cancer/palliative care or related subject.
* Non-medical prescribing


Knowledge & Experience

* Management of patients with complex needs
* Clinical governance awareness
* Clinical leadership skills
* Use of effective communication when talking to patients and families
* 2 years' post registration experience within either clinical settings of neurosurgery, neurology and oncology or palliative care.
* Awareness of equality and diversity
* An understanding of the role of the CNS within service provision
* Advanced communication skills
* Evidence of experience in research
* Experience within relevant sub specialty
