Overview
This role involves working within a team delivering tertiary-level surgical care to Gynaecological cancer patients. It requires a dedicated individual interested in gynaecological cancer who will be immersed in complex surgery. A key part of the role is good communication to discuss diagnosis, complex surgical issues, and subsequent management. A strong background in general gynaecology is required to understand the patient journey prior to cancer diagnosis and to support the patient throughout. The fellow must work well in a team and across other specialties. Surgical training will be tailored to the individual’s ability, with ample training available in both open and robotic surgery.
Active participation in weekly Specialist Multidisciplinary Team meetings to triage patients for local or specialist surgery is encouraged. Consultation of new and follow-up patients in clinics supervised by Senior Colleagues and supported by Clinical Nurse Specialists will occur regularly. Identification and management of complex pre-operative issues will be encountered, with experience gained in this area. Daily ward rounds/pre-operative assessments will be shared among Clinical Fellows along with theatre sessions. There will be opportunities to provide emergency services covering gynaecology, colorectal, urology and plastics as part of the directorate.
In addition to training in gynaecological oncology, there are opportunities to attend MDTs and theatres of other specialties, as well as non-surgical specialties at The Christie. Research and audit within the role is encouraged and accommodated within the fellow’s rota.
