We are delighted to welcome applications from outstanding, dynamic and suitably experienced individuals for the role of Science Technician, to be in post ready for the School opening in September 2025. This is a rare opportunity for the right candidate to work with the Founding Head of Science to help shape and develop world-class Science provision from the ground up. The successful candidate will have overall responsibility for providing effective and efficient technical support for the teaching of all Science at Wetherby Pembridge. In the School’s early phase, the successful candidate will initially be the sole technician for the department and will need to have expertise in all areas of Science, providing equipment and resources for Biology, Chemistry and Physics lessons, whilst also supporting the wider functioning of the department.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Preparation
* On a daily basis, preparing apparatus, materials and solutions, setting up equipment for use in Science practical lessons and collecting equipment afterwards
* Ensuring that the requirements of practicals prescribed by GCSE and A-level assessments are met, including preparing, setting up and testing equipment, chemicals and other materials
* Supporting teaching through familiarisation with lesson plans and long-term plans as well as classroom management and behaviour routines
* Supporting the work of teachers in practical activities within the classroom to ensure safe and effective use of specialist equipment and materials
* Running trials of experiments prior to classes to ensure safe techniques, providing model data if required
* Preparing demonstration materials for teaching needs
* Ensuring the smooth running of workshop/ laboratory activities / Open Days
* Supporting teaching staff in the preparation of other (paper-based) resources
Resources
* Maintaining stock levels and undertaking stock checks
* Placing departmental orders, monitoring and progressing where necessary
* Maintaining manual and computerised records / management information systems as required
* Liaising with the Head of Science to arrange the ordering and organisation of textbooks, exercise books and folders for distribution at the start of each academic year and maintaining adequate stocks of these for use throughout the year
* Identifying the need for and selection of equipment in consultation with teaching staff
* Taking responsibility for the organisation, movement and storage of equipment, chemicals and other materials in accordance with the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) and other relevant regulations
* Arranging the disposal of waste laboratory equipment including chemical and biological waste in accordance with established laboratory procedures
* Participating in the development of Science department practical and technical facilities to fulfil teaching needs
* Supporting the development of activities for Science Club, Open Days and British Science Week events
* Supporting in-class teaching at various times, including admission and outreach events involving other schools (e.g. local primary schools)
* Accompanying departmental trips and visits during the school day (and by negotiation on residential trips if the technician wishes)
Servicing and maintenance
* Ensuring a clean, tidy and safe teaching environment for teachers and students in the Science laboratories
* Monitoring broken glass bins on a regular basis
* Carrying out gas checks and ensuring all COSHH cupboards doors are locked at the end of each day
* Carrying out half termly checks in the laboratories to ensure they are stocked with essentials (e.g. glassware, distilled water, stationery)
* Participating in the layout planning for new facilities, the provision of specialised requirements and determining general furniture, fittings and services
* Ensuring satisfactory maintenance and security of laboratories, storage and preparation rooms, and liaising with relevant colleagues on overall safety requirements
* Helping to assess the future needs of the department in relation to space, furniture and equipment and the integration of these within existing facilities as the School grows
* Maintaining and repairing departmental equipment or arranging this with external providers, where necessary
* Supporting the design and maintenance of display boards
Safety and Security
* Providing advice and assistance to teaching staff on problems of experimental technique, health and safety and correct use of equipment
* Supporting the Head of Science in ensuring that satisfactory standards of safety and security are maintained within the Science department and rectifying any deficiencies as noted
* Interpreting and observing the relevant Health and Safety legislation according to the Health and Safety at Work Act and COSHH regulations with respect to animals, plants, chemicals, equipment and the maintenance of Science laboratories
* Liaising with CLEAPSS as required to obtain advice on Health and Safety matters and ensuring staff in the department are updated on any changes to legislation
* Writing departmental risk assessments, where required
* Liaising with external organisations for departmental matters, when required
* Completing annual checks and arranging for statutory maintenance of equipment such as fume cupboards and pressure vessels
* Providing and maintaining Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for technical and teaching staff and pupils
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL HAVE:
* An excellent knowledge of Science and genuine interest in and passion for the subject. We appreciate that candidates may have a preference amongst the three sciences, but this role will involve supporting all three sciences in the School’s opening phase
* Previous experience of working in a school laboratory, or experience working in a school environment
* Some experience of setting up a new science department and prep room
* An awareness of relevant Health and Safety regulations within a Science environment including the safe use and storage of chemicals
* The ability to manipulate apparatus and other laboratory equipment
* Sound mathematical skills
* Excellent organisational, interpersonal and communication skills
* High levels of digital literacy
* An ability to work under pressure and to deadlines
* Effective communication skills, both oral and in writing
* The ability to manage their own workload and work collaboratively with the Science team
* A patient approach to working with young people
* A commitment to supporting students in co-curricular Science clubs and with investigative work in class
* The resilience, drive, strength of character and sense of both humour and perspective to thrive in a fast-paced, demanding and ambitious environment
