About The Role
Balfour Beattys Regional Buildings division is seeking a Technical Lead who can bring authority, clarity and ambition to some of the UKs most complex and meaningful projects. This national role gives you the opportunity to lead design thinking from the very topsetting the technical direction, shaping early strategy and influencing the engineering approach long before a project reaches site. Youll be at the forefront of programmes that protect national security, strengthen critical public services and enhance the environments where people live, work and recover, spanning Defence, Healthcare and major M&E-driven schemes.
Youll act as a senior technical voice across a diverse national portfolio, guiding multidisciplinary teams through challenging design and delivery environments. Your leadership will ensure solutions are robust, innovative and aligned with best practice, while also championing safety, quality and long-term performance. As a trusted partner to project leaders, customers and supply chain specialists, youll help resolve complex engineering issues, shape design strategy and drive consistent technical standards across regions.

What you'll be doing
The Technical Leader works across all building services projects to provide technical assurance and support at bid, pre-construction, delivery and handover stages. The Technical Lead is expected to be conversant and competent working around all building services related technical matters but will draw upon expertise and specific technical competence from internal and external resources. Working closely with the building services director, operational, commercial and planning leads, the Technical Leader will provide regular reporting on all technical matters and communicate any direction or instruction back to the project teams.
Provide support to the project design and leadership teams in their planning and execution of works to ensure they understand their responsibilities, have the necessary competences and are employing the appropriate processes and procedures.
Ensure project teams identify the key technical issues and risks and help to provide and/or procure competent guidance from internal and external resources to deliver technically compliant solutions.
Lead the Operation and Technical Review Process to ensure projects are sufficiently interrogated and actions defined including:
Establishing the construction strategy at the outset to provide direction for the designers to follow.
Design and scope gaps and strategies are established to close these out as well as the routes to technical, regulatory and statutory compliance including the Building Regulations and the Building Safety Act.
Technical complexities and risks are identified and managed determining competencies for internal resourcing but also external designers and suppliers.
Appointments are based on comprehensive integrated planning, definition of responsibilities, interfaces and information requirements.
A collaboration strategy is developed to manage team interaction including the use of common data environment, BIM and model strategies and the meeting and communication formats and cadence.
Be the guardians of the Design Management processes and procedures stored on the corporate BMS and maintain and develop these as appropriate.
Represent BBK building services at related design and technical forums to ensure compliant and consistent delivery of all technical assurance and design related matters.
Work With Other Technical Leaders And Utilise The Design Management Community To Maintain And Develop Further, As Appropriate, Buildings-related Design Management Process And Procedure Ensuring They Remain Aligned With
Objectives for delivering technical assurance
The corporate BMS for design and engineering
Changing regulation and overarching corporate initiatives
Liaise with the Design Management and operational teams to ensure compliant and consistent design and technically assured solutions.
Audit and review to ensure that Design Management is being implemented in accordance with the Processes and Procedures held on the BMS. Lead regular reviews of the adequacy of these managing their development and maintenance.
Ensure the design management community are kept informed of technical and business-related developments and engage the wider technical community to support workstreams necessary to maintain and develop internal process and procedure.
Assist in identifying competency and training requirements for building services design and technical management team members and liaise with internal resource to help organise/facilitate internal and external training, as required.
Regularly liaise with the UKCS Buildings Quality, H&S and Sustainability Leads to ensure the buildings technical assurance offer is compliant with all related and relevant requirements. Ensure project responses accord with these as well as Zero Harm, Right First Time and MMC initiatives.
Who we're looking for
Experience at a senior level within a design and build MEPH contractor of delivering design and/or technical services at each key project stage, across multiple sectors and on differing project sizes.
Be conversant with current changing Regulations including the Building Safety Act and the requirements for individual and collective responsibilities.
Leadership skills in a matrix organisation are required to deliver services in a timely manner with internal and external customer interaction.
Experience of participation in Leadership teams to successfully implement business strategies.
Good interpersonal and communication skills are required, coupled with an ability to form effective relationships with partners under time pressure. The ability to form a constructive and effective relationship with the Building Services Director will be key to delivery of the role.
Good working knowledge of the implementation of BIM is required and experience of the NEC form of contract.
Professional membership with the CIBSE/MIET/CABE/RIBA or equivalent is a requirement.
Should have a desire to continuously pursue innovation and development and be able to motivate both internal and external teams nurturing, mentoring and coaching less experienced team members.
