Offer description

Overview

We deliver Health Visiting and School Nursing services across six localities within Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, including Bude, Launceston, Liskeard, Helston and Penzance.

We provide an evidence‑based, family‑centred public health service focused on identifying health needs, inequality and vulnerability within families and communities.

Role and Responsibilities

This is a full‑time fixed‑term post (Band 5 AfC) beginning September 2026. The role is a training contract for the Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (SCPHN) in Health Visiting, delivered in partnership with the University of the West of England (UWE). The course combines taught modules at Bristol and/or Plymouth with clinical placements in Cornwall, and successful completion allows registration on Part 3 of the NMC register and potential progression to a permanent SCPHN HV vacancy within Cornwall Council.

Location: St Austell, Newquay or Bodmin.

What you’ll need to succeed

* A qualified NMC registered children/adult/learning disability/mental health nurse or midwife with post‑qualification experience working with children and families and a keen interest in the wider public health role.
* A reflective and emotionally intelligent practitioner who makes good use of supervision and support and has a real interest in addressing the needs of children, young people and families.
* Ability to address challenging and sensitive issues with families in a clear and supportive way, and to be innovative and adaptable to meet community needs.
* Live registration on Part 1 or Part 2 of the NMC register.
* Classified honours degree (2:2 or above) in nursing or midwifery, or a nursing diploma with recent completed master’s level academic study.

What you’ll get in return

We provide a supportive supervision framework, clear career pathways, and flexible working options. Your reward includes a competitive salary, defined benefit pension, generous annual leave (with purchase option), a national award‑winning employee health and wellbeing programme, and access to a wide range of discounts.

Additional Information

Visa sponsorship is not available for this role.

Equality, Diversity and Safeguarding

Fairness and inclusion are at the heart of our vision for Cornwall. We strive to achieve a diverse workforce inclusive of all backgrounds, cultures and identities; e.g., race, disability, sex, gender reassignment status, age, religion and sexual orientation. We are an equal‑opportunity and Disability‑Confident employer and will assess applicants on merit.

Cornwall Council is committed to safeguarding and follows safer recruitment principles to ensure our staff and volunteers are suitable to work with children, young people and adults at risk.
