Brief Description

You will help keep our nation moving every day. A critical part of our work is the daily upkeep of the rail network. As a technician, you'll work outdoors in a team, supporting essential maintenance to keep the railway running safely and smoothly for passengers and freight users.

Our technician community comes from diverse backgrounds, and this might be your first consideration of a career in rail. We focus on your transferable skills and behaviours, and we will provide all necessary training to ensure you work safely and competently on the network. If you succeed, you can look forward to a rewarding career with a company that recently ranked among the top 50 in Glassdoor's 2021 Best Places to Work.

Please Note: There may be a requirement to work on call if you opt for the standard maintenance contract.

About the role (External)

Our technicians serve as the essential link between team leaders and operatives. They work outdoors in all conditions, at all times of the year, day or night, often engaging in manual work and transporting equipment across challenging terrain. Safety, respect for rules, and teamwork are critical, especially when working near moving trains at high speeds.

You matter to your team: as a natural team player, you'll be able to lead when asked, using your skills to deliver work safely and ensure your team has the right competencies. You'll model safe working behaviours and confidently challenge risks to safety, ensuring everyone returns home safely each day.

Your commitment to self-development and continuous learning is vital. We will provide training to develop both technical and non-technical skills, enabling you to transition into a rewarding rail career, even if you're from another industry.

Your skills matter

Our technicians play a vital role in maintenance. You don't necessarily need rail experience but must demonstrate how your transferable skills meet the following:

* Leadership: Ability to lead, motivate, and direct a team safely and efficiently.
* Effective communication: Ability to give clear instructions and communicate effectively.
* Technical skills: Knowledge of inspection, faulting, maintenance, and renewal techniques relevant to your discipline.
* Safety: Role model safe behaviours, implement safe systems, and challenge unsafe situations.
* Problem-solving: Persistence in finding safe, effective solutions; stay updated with standards and procedures.
* Willingness to learn: Commitment to developing skills and knowledge.
* Relevant qualification: Ideally NVQ Level 1 or 2 in your discipline or equivalent experience.

Additional information:

* Shifts: Includes days, nights, and weekends.
* Outdoor work: Comfortable working in all weather conditions.
* Safety: Employment subject to drug, alcohol testing, medical, and BPSS checks, including eyesight and hearing assessments.
* Driving: Must hold a category B driving license to operate Network Rail vehicles.
* Commute: Reside within 60 minutes of the location.
