Job Purpose: Ensure all fleet management activities are conducted safely, legally, and efficiently. You’ll efficiently manage the maintenance, allocation, hiring, buying and utilisation of vehicles and equipment, fostering a culture of safety, compliance, and customer service. Job Responsibilities: Compliance & Safety: Ensure the fleet adheres to all legal requirements, including DVSA regulations, tachograph laws, and Health & Safety standards. Act as the main point of contact for all fleet-related audits and inspections. Fleet Maintenance: Oversee the maintenance, servicing, MOTs, and repairs of all vehicles and plant. Defect Management: Ensure all defect reports are monitored, logged, and acted upon promptly. Proactively manage the rectification of defects and ensure that issues do not affect the efficiency of operations. Fleet Performance: Maintain a system of monitoring and tracking fleet performance, including fuel efficiency, driver performance, and vehicle wear-and-tear. Driver Compliance: Monitor and ensure driver adherence to tachograph regulations, driver hours, and the Highway Code. Provide regular driver assessments and coaching to improve compliance and operational efficiency. Recruitment & Retention: Oversee the recruitment of drivers, ensuring all candidates meet DVSA and company standards. Foster a positive working environment to retain staff and reduce turnover. Performance Monitoring: Manage and monitor the performance of all drivers and operational staff, setting clear objectives and providing ongoing feedback. Encourage high standards and a culture of continuous improvement. Operational Support: Work closely with Operations to ensure they have a clear understanding of driver availability and working hours to optimise project delivery timelines. Proactively manage operational challenges that arise, providing practical solutions to issues related to fleet or transport management. Continuous Improvement: Constantly review processes, workflows, and systems to identify areas for improvement in fleet and transport operations. Implement strategies to improve operational efficiency and cost-effectiveness. Budget Management: Support in the management of the transport and fleet budgets, ensuring the efficient use of resources, and providing cost-effective solutions for fleet management. Legal Compliance: Ensure all vehicles comply with relevant legislation, including tax, insurance, and safety checks. Maintain all necessary documentation to ensure smooth legal operations. Record Keeping: Maintain accurate records of vehicle inspections, driver hours, and other regulatory compliance documentation. Provide reports as required. Experience of FORS accreditation and going through this audit process Leadership: Provide day-to-day leadership to the transport team. Be a hands-on manager who leads by example and fosters a collaborative and positive work environment. Motivation & Support: Inspire the team to perform to the best of their abilities, addressing areas of improvement and offering guidance on achieving set targets Personal Attributes: Proven experience in fleet and transport management, including managing HGVs, vehicles, and plant equipment. Familiarity with the maintenance, repair, and servicing requirements of such fleets is essential. A thorough understanding of drivers' hours, tachograph rules, and legal compliance for transport and fleet operations. Strong problem-solving ability and the capacity to make effective decisions under pressure. A proactive, hands-on approach with the ability to lead by example Experience required: Proven experience in fleet and transport management, including managing HGVs, vehicles, and plant equipment. Familiarity with the maintenance, repair, and servicing requirements of such fleets is essential. A thorough understanding of drivers' hours, tachograph rules, and legal compliance for transport and fleet operations. Knowledge of construction plant & machinery, including compliance with LOLER (Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations) and PUWER (Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations) is highly desirable. Utilities Sector Experience: Previous experience working for a utilities contractor would be a strong advantage. Familiarity with the operational requirements and challenges of the utilities industry will be beneficial. Knowledge of Health & Safety regulations. Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills to effectively manage and motivate a diverse team. Ability to make quick, informed decisions to resolve operational challenges while ensuring the ongoing efficiency and compliance of the fleet. At least 5 years of experience in a relatable role Essential qualifications: A valid Transport Manager Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) is essential for the role. Competence with fleet management software, vehicle tracking systems, and basic office software (e.g., Microsoft Office) to maintain records and generate reports.
