TheColorectal Surgery Department is looking to appoint into a 6 month locumconsultant post available from September 2025.
The successful candidate will join the Colorectal Surgical team which currently has 12 substantive consultants. The post-holder(s) will provide Colorectal and General surgical services in theatre, outpatient and ward settings. There will be a requirement to take part in the departmental on-call rota. There are exciting opportunities to contribute to teaching / education programmes and research projects.
The post will be based at St James's University Teaching Hospital.
The successful applicant(s) should possess FRCS (or equivalent) and should be included on the Specialist Register or within 6 months of CCT at the time of interview, if currently within a training programme within the UK. In accordance with the consultant appointment regulations, all other categories of doctors must be on the Specialist Register.
Main duties of the job

The job will consist of specialist colorectal and general surgery, ward rounds, surgical outpatient clinics and day case / inpatient elective operating. Regular colonoscopy lists are also available for individuals who have an interest. There are separate Colorectal and UGI/HPB on call rotas and it is expected that the successful candidate will contribute to the colorectal aspect, most likely on a 1 in 10 basis. There will be exciting opportunities to engage with research and education in the colorectal unit and on a wider regional basis especially with respect to intestinal failure. The role of each Consultant in the department is intended to be as an equal senior to other Consultants in the Department and in the Trust.

The post will be based at Lincoln Wing, St James' University Teaching Hospital.
The John Goligher Colorectal Department at Leeds Teaching Hospitals has a reputation for high quality education and research. The department is currently engaged in a large number of national studies and trials. The department also has a significant reputation as a large provider of specialist and sub-specialist Colorectal services. The department is responsible for over 20,000 outpatient appointments, 1,350 elective day case operations and 1,400 elective inpatient procedures.
The colorectal unit in SJUH is co-located with acute general surgery wards, HDU, ICU, the same day admission unit, the surgical assessment area and the generic general surgery / urology 5 day wards. The elective colorectal surgery theatres and emergency and CEPOD theatres are also housed in the same wing at SJUH. Main site out-patient clinics are held at SJUH, whilst some peripheral clinics are held at Wharfedale Hospital.
The general surgery service in Leeds has undergone significant reorganisation in recent years. All abdominal general surgery disciplines are now co-located on the SJUH site.
2. OBJECTIVES OF THE POST
2.1 To deliver care to patients with Colorectal and General Surgical conditions at St James\'s University Teaching Hospital including
Elective operating both day case and inpatient
Care of in-patients
.
2.2 To link with Consultant colleagues in other relevant site specialist teams within the Colorectal and General Surgery team and across the Trust especially with respect to intestinal failure surgery. In this regard there are established close links with vascular radiology, plastic surgery and urology which the post-holder will need to maintain and develop further in order to optimise outcomes for complex intestinal failure patients.
2.2 To work with colleagues in Colorectal and General Surgery to deliver acute on call for 3 - 4 days per on-call period. This includes both out-of-hours cover in addition to acute ward rounds during normal working hours.
2.3 To contribute to research, teaching and new developments within the department. The post holder will be encouraged to facilitate and contribute to the current clinical research programs ongoing in the department.

3. REQUIREMENTS OF THE POST
3.1 Service Delivery
General
The Trust expects consultants to deliver clinical service as agreed with commissioners and other stakeholders. This will include:

continuously improving the quality and efficiency of personal and team practice
working with other staff and teams to ensure that the various criteria for service delivery are met, such as
o achieving the best clinical outcomes within the resources available
o waiting times
Consultants in LTHT are line managed by their specialty Lead Clinician working in conjunction with a Business Manager. This specialty team is then managed alongside a number of other specialties in a Clinical Service (or Support) Unit (CSU) led by a Clinical Director as the responsible person, and supported by a full time General Manager and a full time Head of Nursing.
The Clinical Director and their team report operationally to the Deputy Chief Executive / Chief Nurse (Deputy CEO / CN). The Clinical Director will work closely with the Deputy CEO / CN team which includes the Medical Director for Operations, Nurse Director for Operations, four Assistant Directors of Operations (ADOs) and a Performance Team, with each ADO aligned to specific CSUs.
Professionally, consultants report to Dr Phil Wood, Chief Medical Officer.
Person Specification
Qualifications
* MB BS (or equivalent).
* CCT with subspecialty accreditation in Colorectal Surgery (or within six months of same) or equivalent qualification.
* Eligible for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment and hold a current licence to practice.
* Eligibility to work in the UK.
* Is up to date and fit to practise safely
* All applicants to have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues demonstrated by one of the following:
* passing a Secure English Language Test (SELT) from an approved provider
* having a GCSE, A level, Scottish National Qualification level 4 or 5, Scottish Higher or Advanced Higher in English, gained through study at a UK school that you began when you were under 18
* having a degree-level academic qualification that was taught in English - if you studied abroad, youll need to apply through Ecctis (formerly UK NARIC) for confirmation that your qualification is equivalent to a UK bachelors degree, masters degree or PhD
* You do not need to prove your knowledge of English if youve already passed an English Language assessment that is accepted by the relevant regulated professional body.
* Higher degree e.g. MD/PhD relevant to the subspecialty.
Experience
* Should have completed a recognised training programme in General Surgery with a Colorectal subspecialty interest.
* Must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in all aspect of elective and acute General Surgery.
* He/she must demonstrate higher training in Colorectal Surgery.
* Evidence of continuous career progression consistent with personal circumstances.
* Evidence of the ability to carry out medical research.
* Experience in training undergraduate medical students and postgraduate doctors.
* Experience of participation in regular clinical audit.
* Understanding of current issues in the NHS.
* Well organised and skilled in good time management.
* Effective interpersonal skills.
* Demonstrate ability to relate to and work within a team.
* Previous experience of supervising research by junior staff.
* Previous attendance on Appraisal Techniques and Small Group Teaching Workshops.
* Attendance at recognised management course.

* Applicants must be on the Specialist Register or within six months of being admitted to the Register for trainees if currently in a training programme within the UK or have references which have been authorised by the Deputy Medical Director and Clinical Director.
